Repatriation from Guinea to Moldova

For Guinea there is a public guide written for British families (updated November 2024). We use it as an orientation and say clearly what still has to be confirmed for Moldova.

Issuing authority and document
Guinea is not on the list of the Strasbourg Agreement (1973; 24 states, Germany only signed) on the transfer of corpses (public list, checked 13.10.2026), so Guinean rules apply together with the requirements of the Republic of Moldova. The UK government guide (updated 05.11.2024) says the death must be registered with the local authorities, sometimes through the funeral director. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026) shows no mission of the Republic of Moldova in Guinea, so we establish the competent mission for the mortuary passport before filing.
Transport
Conakry is about 5,800 km from Chișinău (our own straight-line calculation). Conakry does not appear in the destinations list of Chișinău airport (RMO; Wikipedia version of 29.09.2026), so we do not assume a direct flight: the air route with a stopover is set once we have the documents, the airport and the airline's conditions.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The British guide gives no timeline for Guinea; it only says that where there is no mortuary the funeral director must move the body to temperature-controlled storage as quickly as possible. For Moldova the embalming certificate, legalisations, the competent mission and a flight with a stopover come on top.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The death is registered with the local authorities; the funeral director can help. If the death occurred in hospital from natural causes, the health officer makes a declaration of death in French, with the date, hour and cause. The guide says the local authorities must also be told if the person had an infectious condition, such as hepatitis or HIV.

The main public hospitals and private clinics in Conakry, and some regional hospitals, have mortuaries with temperature-controlled storage; in rural areas they may not be available. If there is no mortuary, the funeral director must move the body to temperature-controlled storage as quickly as possible. So we establish where the body is at the start.

Required documents

For repatriation the British guide says the funeral director can help provide the necessary documents, such as the local death certificate and a certificate of embalming, and the next of kin must give a letter of authorisation. The guide does not detail the embalming certificate. What the Republic of Moldova requires and what its mission issues we did not find in a public source, and we confirm it before filing.

According to mfa.gov.md, a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the state concerned, and transport is allowed only under that country's law and international rules. Guinea does not appear in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, checked 13.10.2026), so an apostille cannot be assumed; we confirm the order of legalisations with the competent mission.

Specifics in Guinea

The guide says there is no cremation facility in Guinea; the nearest is in Sierra Leone, a five-hour drive from Conakry. So an urn from Guinea is not a simple option; we have no source on the rules for crossing a border with ashes, and we do not promise this route.

If the body is transported, the local funeral director can collect personal belongings and send them together with the body. If there is an investigation, clothing may be retained as evidence until the court case ends. The guide notes that the British Embassy cannot take responsibility for belongings; for Moldova we establish separately who will collect them.
