Repatriation from Zambia to Moldova

Zambia is thousands of kilometres from Moldova, but the paperwork is issued in English. We take you through the steps in order: registering the death, release of the body and the documents for transport.

Issuing authority and document
Zambia is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (list consulted 13.10.2026), so Zambian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to UK government guidance (updated 28.11.2024), the death is registered with the Office of the Registrar General, Department of Births, Marriages and Deaths, in Lusaka or at Boma offices elsewhere; a funeral director can do the registration. The list of Moldovan missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026) shows no mission in southern Africa and does not name Zambia among the countries covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
Transport
Lusaka is roughly 6,900 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from the cities' coordinates). The list of destinations of Chișinău airport (secondary source, consulted 13.10.2026) shows no flights to Zambia or to any city in southern Africa; hubs such as Istanbul, Vienna, Frankfurt and Dubai do appear, but we have not verified whether they connect onward to Lusaka. The airline and departure city are chosen with the family once the documents are seen.
Timing
The UK guidance gives two markers: the death certificate can be collected within 48 hours of registration, and the coroner decides when the body can be released for burial or cremation. It gives no timings for the other steps; we confirm the timeline once we have the documents.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to the UK guidance, the death is registered at the Office of the Registrar General (Lusaka, Kambendekela House) or at the local Boma office. The deceased's full name, date of birth and passport number are usually needed. A funeral director can collect the certificate for relatives with a written request and a notarised copy of an ID.

Next of kin must identify the body visually; if it is damaged, DNA, dental records or fingerprints may be used. A post-mortem is usually required when the cause of death is unclear or the death is suspicious. The guidance says the coroner decides when the body can be released.

Required documents

The UK guidance does not list the export documents for a body (embalming, coffin, permit); it gives no list of export documents; on ashes it says the funeral director obtains the requirements from the registry and the airline. What the Moldovan side additionally requires (mortuary passport, translations, legalisation) we establish with the competent Moldovan mission rather than assume.

In the Hague Convention status table (updated 30.06.2026) we did not find a row for Zambia; we draw no conclusion from this and check, before submission, how a Zambian document can be used in Moldova.

Specifics of Zambia

The guidance notes that public mortuaries have poor refrigeration (open trays in a cold room), while private ones, run by funeral directors, are better equipped. To collect the body, the next of kin or a person named in written consent must attend.

Cremation is described as widely available, and the local funeral director explains the arrangements. For ashes the guidance refers to local authority requirements, which the funeral director obtains; we confirm the requirements for Moldova separately. The guidance is written for repatriation to the UK.

Frequently asked questions

In what language is the death certificate issued in Zambia?

UK guidance (28.11.2024) says death certificates are printed in English and that English is widely spoken in Zambia. Whether Moldova needs a translation or other formalities we confirm with the competent mission before submission.

Who decides when the body can be released?

According to the guidance, the coroner decides when the body can be released for burial or cremation. The next of kin or a person with written consent must attend to collect it.

Can cremation be done in Zambia and the urn brought home?

The guidance calls cremation widely available. The Zambian requirements for ashes are obtained by the funeral director, and we check the requirements of Moldova and the airline before the flight.

Does Moldova have an embassy in Zambia?

The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) shows no embassy in Zambia, nor Zambia among countries covered by another mission. The page carries no update date, so we clarify the competent mission with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the start.
