Repatriation from Eswatini to Moldova
We help with the Eswatini and Moldovan paperwork and with transport to Moldova. The main source on the Eswatini procedure is a British guide from 2022, so we say openly what is confirmed and what we clarify case by case.
- Issuing authority and document
- Eswatini is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), according to the list consulted on 13.10.2026. According to the British government guide (published 13.10.2022), a death is registered within 60 days at an office of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The list of Moldovan missions (consulted 13.10.2026) shows no embassy or consulate in Eswatini and mentions no accreditation for it, so which mission issues the mortuary passport remains to be clarified with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Transport
- By air, usually via South Africa. The British guide says there are no direct flights from Eswatini to the UK and that most bodies are repatriated via South Africa. In a straight line it is about 8,200 km from Mbabane to Chișinău (our own calculation). No direct flights to Chișinău (RMO) appear in the undated Wikipedia destination table; we have not verified the transit rules.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The British guide says a post-mortem is usually carried out within 1 to 2 days, but the police and the pathologist decide; the legalisation of documents and flight connections through South Africa also matter.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the British guide a death is registered within 60 days; after that a sworn statement before a notary is needed. A post-mortem is required where the cause of death is unnatural or unknown and, the guide says, if the body is going to be repatriated; it is usually done by state pathologists, and the police decide whether it is needed.
Local funeral directors prepare the documents for repatriation. The guide does not say who issues the embalming certificate and the transfer permit, so we find this out at the start.
Required documents
For taking the body out, the British guide lists a local civil registry death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains.
Eswatini is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (HCCH, consulted 13.10.2026; no objections marked in the table), as is Moldova. We have not confirmed who places the apostille in Eswatini, and the mortuary passport is issued, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs page (13.10.2026), by Moldovan embassies or consulates.
Specifics of Eswatini
For cremation the British guide requires "Schedule A" forms (completed by the next of kin) and "Schedule B" forms (completed by a medical practitioner); the funeral home provides both forms and a cremation certificate for the airline. On leaving with an urn, the death certificate and the cremation certificate are shown.
The information comes from a guide for British citizens, not from Eswatini legislation; we have not confirmed any rule from an official Eswatini source.
