Repatriation from Chad to Moldova

For Chad we have one openly available official guide, and it is older; it says the process is slow and bureaucratic. We tell you plainly what is known and what is not.

Issuing authority and document
Chad is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) on the transfer of corpses (list of 24 states, consulted 13.10.2026), so Chadian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. UK government guidance (published 13.12.2023, with no later update date shown) says the death is registered with the local authorities, and a funeral director can sometimes do this. On mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) there is no Moldovan mission in Chad and the country is not named among those covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
Transport
N’Djamena is roughly 4,100 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation). No flight to Chad appears in the list of destinations of Chișinău airport (secondary source, 13.10.2026), so we plan on a connection; specific routes have not been verified. The guidance says Chad has no services for repatriating bodies abroad, so the whole route is built from scratch, depending on the city where the death occurred.
Timing
The UK guidance gives no fixed deadlines and warns that the process in Chad is bureaucratic and slow, and that arrangements may not happen when the family would prefer. For that reason we give no timeline until we have the documents and the authorities’ reply.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure

According to UK government guidance (13.12.2023), the death must be registered with the local authorities; a funeral director can sometimes do the registration. The guidance also notes that in Chad, in most cases, deaths are not declared, and funerals are usually arranged in line with Muslim traditions. The authorities must be told if the person had an infectious condition such as hepatitis or HIV.

A medical certificate is presented to obtain the death certificate, and relatives should have to hand the date and place of birth and the parents’ names, including the mother’s maiden name, because the certificate records them. The next of kin need not be in Chad: they can instruct a local funeral director by phone or email.

Required documents

The UK guidance does not list the documents for taking the body out of Chad and says nothing about embalming or coffins; it notes that the funeral director can gather information for the family. The Chadian death certificate is issued in Arabic or French, and the guidance requires an official translation for use in the UK. What the Chadian authorities and the Moldovan side require (mortuary passport, apostille, translations) we establish with the local funeral home and the competent mission.

In the Hague Convention (1961) status table (updated 30.06.2026) we did not find a row for Chad; we draw no conclusion about the apostille and, before submission, check how Chadian documents can be used in Moldova.

Specifics of Chad

The guidance states plainly that Chad has no services for repatriating bodies abroad and that cremation is not an option. The options named are local burial or repatriation, the latter organised by the next of kin through an international funeral director.

For Chad we have a single openly available official guide, published in 2023; we found no second official source to confirm it, and the practical situation (airports, local funeral homes, authorisations) may be different. So we treat Chad as a case where we check every step before promising it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a death have to be declared in Chad?

The UK guidance says the death must be registered with the local authorities but notes that in most cases deaths are not declared. For repatriation we need the certificate, so we treat registration as the first step.

In what language is the death certificate?

In Arabic or French, according to the guidance. The guidance requires an official translation for use in the UK; what translation the Moldovan side needs we establish separately.

Is cremation possible in Chad?

No. The UK government guidance says cremation is not an option in Chad. Local burial or repatriation of the body remain.

If Chad has no repatriation services, who handles the transport?

The guidance says the next of kin are responsible for arranging repatriation and may use an international funeral director. Together with the family we build the route, with a local funeral home for the Chadian documents, and we say openly what is not yet confirmed.
