Repatriation from Sri Lanka to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Sri Lanka to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Embassy in New Delhi. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Sri Lanka are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Sri Lanka
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Sri Lanka always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Sri Lanka are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Sri Lanka: reporting a death to the Birth and Death Registrar
In Sri Lanka a death is registered by the local Birth and Death Registrar, within the Registrar General's Department (RGD). When someone dies at home, it is reported within five days to the village officer, the Grama Niladhari, who passes the notice to the registrar. When someone dies in hospital, the report goes to the registrar assigned to that hospital, with form CR02 and the hospital's report. It can be reported by a close relative or by the person arranging the burial or cremation. We help establish which registrar is responsible for the place of death, because that decides where the document is issued.
Polish matters from Sri Lanka are handled by the Polish Embassy in New Delhi, whose jurisdiction also covers India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and the Maldives. Remains or an urn travel by air.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in New Delhi.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
