Repatriation from Tajikistan to Poland

Procedure: Tajikistan
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Tajikistan always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Tajikistan are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Tajikistan: handled from Tashkent, with a restriction on urns
Tajikistan is handled by the Polish Embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. A visit is arranged by email with the consulate, and the page is available in Polish, Russian and Uzbek. Diplomatic relations with Tajikistan were established on 11 February 1992. Before documents are submitted we check that copies and stamps are complete, and we inform the family of every step.
An important note: the Tashkent embassy's page states that since 7 April 2020, until further notice, the consul issues the certificate only for ashes after cremation. For that reason, before any decision on the form of return, we always confirm the current situation with the consulate. The further order of steps is always similar: a local document confirming the death and the local authorities' consent to take the remains out of the country, in Poland the starosta's permit, the consul's certificate, and finally air transport.
