Procedure: Kazakhstan

Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Kazakhstan always requires the Polish consul's certificate.

Documents from Kazakhstan are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).

Kazakhstan: the permit from Poland comes before the visit

In Kazakhstan, a visit to the consular post is arranged by email only, and documents can be submitted in person or by post. The burial permit is issued by a Polish starost or city president, so it must be obtained before the visit, even when the family lives in Kazakhstan. If the consul refuses, he issues a decision, against which a complaint can be lodged with the Minister of Foreign Affairs within 7 days, through the consul. The certificate is collected in person or sent by post.

The consul also requires a copy of the death certificate or another document confirming the death. If the family does not bring the deceased home, the consul asks the local authorities for a burial in a public cemetery under local law. From Poland we file the application for the permit, gather the local documents and organise the transport, and we also establish which office serves your region. We confirm the detailed requirements of this country's authorities on enquiry in your case.

The Polish consul's certificate

The certificate is issued by the Polish consul competent for this country. We confirm the mission in your case.

How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
