Repatriation from North Korea to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from North Korea to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish consul confirmed in your case. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from North Korea are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: North Korea
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from North Korea always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from North Korea are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
North Korea: we settle it with the post in Pyongyang
The Polish Embassy operates in Pyongyang, and Poland has had diplomatic relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea since 16 October 1948. We confirm the Polish mission competent for the DPRK in your case. Whether and to what extent it will issue the consul's certificate in a given case, we settle directly with the mission before planning anything. Before documents are submitted we check that copies and stamps are complete, and we inform the family of every step.
The order of steps is always similar. First a local document confirming the death and the local authorities' consent to take the remains out of the country, then in Poland the starosta's permit, followed by the consul's certificate. With the full set of documents air transport of the body or the urn can be booked. In the case of the DPRK we separately check the available flights and whether a family member can enter the country. We guide the family through each of these stages. We clarify the detailed requirements of this country's authorities for your specific case on request.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the Polish consul competent for this country. We confirm the mission in your case.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
