Repatriation from Sweden to Moldova

We help with the Swedish and Moldovan documents and the journey to Moldova. In Sweden the permit to take a body out of the country is issued by the Tax Agency.

Issuing authority and document
Sweden and Moldova are both parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses. Under Swedish law, the body of a person who died in Sweden may be taken out of the country only if Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) has issued a passersedel för lik.
Transport
By air or by road. The mode of transport and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family case by case, depending on the city, the documents and the route.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
Price
Body (repatriation of remains): from 2 800 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The Strasbourg Agreement (1973) provides that during international transfer the body is accompanied by a laissez-passer issued by the competent authority of the State of departure. Separately, the Swedish burial ordinance provides for a passersedel för lik, issued by Skatteverket.

For it to be issued, a burial or cremation certificate must be obtainable, and the funeral director must confirm that the coffin meets the Swedish rules. The coffin confirmation is not required for transport to Denmark, Finland, Iceland or Norway, so it remains necessary for Moldova. We coordinate the paperwork with the Swedish funeral service.

Required documents

Under Swedish law the passersedel depends on the burial or cremation certificate and the funeral director's confirmation about the coffin; we establish the full list of documents case by case. Sweden and Moldova are both parties to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention and the HCCH status table shows no objection in force; we check which documents need an apostille case by case.

Swedish specifics

A Skatteverket decision on the passersedel can be appealed to the county administrative board (länsstyrelsen), whose decision cannot be appealed further.

For ashes, Swedish law allows the urn to be released to a private person who will take it out of Sweden. What Moldova requires for an urn is checked separately. The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Stockholm is accredited to Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland.

A burial or cremation certificate must be obtainable, and the funeral director must confirm that the coffin meets the Swedish rules. The coffin confirmation is not required for transport to Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway.
