Repatriation from Liechtenstein to Moldova
Liechtenstein is a small state between Switzerland and Austria, with no airport of its own. We help with the local documents, the apostille and the journey to Moldova through the neighbouring countries.
- Issuing authority and document
- Liechtenstein is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973) in the Dutch treaty database list we consulted on 13.10.2026; its neighbour Switzerland has been a party since 18.01.1980. So Liechtenstein's rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. The death is registered at the local civil registry office, normally through the funeral director; gov.uk also mentions a permission to remove the body, issued by a coroner. As for the Moldovan mission: the foreign ministry announced on 23.06.2021 that the ambassador had presented her credentials to Prince Alois of Liechtenstein, residing in Geneva (mfa.gov.md); we have not checked whether this has changed since, so we confirm it at the start.
- Transport
- Liechtenstein has no airport; the nearest large airport is Zurich, about 130 km by road, and the nearest small one is St. Gallen, about 50 km (Wikipedia, 13.10.2026). The country borders only Switzerland and Austria, so the body travels by road through one of them, and gov.uk names the same two exits. In a straight line it is about 1,460 km to Chișinău (our own calculation from coordinates). The Chișinău airport page lists Vienna (Austrian Airlines) and Geneva (FlyOne) and does not list Zurich (Wikipedia, 13.10.2026); we do not assume a particular flight and check the cargo option for each case.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the issue of the certificate and the local permission, on the apostille and on the route chosen through Switzerland or Austria.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): On request
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The death is registered at the local civil registry office in Liechtenstein; the funeral director can do this on the family's behalf. An international death certificate (Sterbeurkunde) is issued with an English translation, and it does not state the cause of death (gov.uk, published 28.03.2025).
For removing the body from the country, gov.uk names the death certificate, the passport of the deceased and a permission to remove the body, issued by a coroner. Because Liechtenstein is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement, the transport document is not the Agreement's laissez-passer; the mortuary passport can be issued by Moldovan embassies and consulates, and we check what is accepted for your case at the start.
Required documents
Usually needed: the Sterbeurkunde with an apostille, the passport or identity document of the deceased, the permission to remove the body, the documents of the person applying and the funeral director's papers. Liechtenstein has been in the Hague Apostille Convention since 17.09.1972 and the HCCH table shows no objection by Moldova (checked 13.10.2026), so an apostille is the usual route; the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that a foreign certificate must be legalised. We confirm the translation and the exact list for each case.
Coffin, cremation and the urn
On the coffin: we have not found an official Liechtenstein source and gov.uk does not describe the requirements, so we do not state them; for each case we settle them with the funeral director and the authorities, taking into account transit through Switzerland or Austria.
Gov.uk says that burial or cremation in Liechtenstein needs a local funeral director and that firms in Switzerland also cover Liechtenstein; whether there is a crematorium in the country, the page does not say. For an urn leaving the country, gov.uk mentions the cremation certificate, a certified copy of the death certificate and notice to the airline. The Strasbourg Agreement does not cover ashes in any case (Article 1(3)); we confirm the documents for Moldova separately.
Frequently asked questions
Is Liechtenstein in the Strasbourg Agreement?
It is not in the list we consulted on 13.10.2026, unlike Switzerland. So for Liechtenstein we do not rely on the Agreement's laissez-passer but on local rules and Moldova's requirements.
Why does the certificate not show the cause of death?
According to gov.uk, Liechtenstein death certificates do not state the cause of death. If the Moldovan authority asks for more information, we check at the start what can be submitted.
Which Moldovan mission handles Liechtenstein?
The only official source we found is the mfa.gov.md announcement of 23.06.2021, with accreditation and residence in Geneva. We found no current list, so we confirm with you before documents are submitted.
Where is the cremation carried out?
The British page only says that funeral firms in Switzerland also cover Liechtenstein and does not name a crematorium. We settle the place with the funeral director, according to the family's wishes.
