Repatriation from Luxembourg to Moldova
If someone close to you has died in Luxembourg, we help bring them home to the Republic of Moldova, with the Luxembourg and Moldovan documents and the journey arranged.
- Issuing authority and document
- Luxembourg and the Republic of Moldova are both parties to the Strasbourg Agreement. According to Luxembourg's declaration, the competent authority is the Direction de la Santé, Division de l'Inspection sanitaire. Moldova has no mission in Luxembourg: the country is covered by the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Brussels.
- Transport
- Transport can be by air or by road. The mode and the handover point in Moldova are settled with the family, depending on the documents, the route and what is available.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): from 2 600 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The death is declared at the civil status office of the Luxembourg commune where it occurred. The declaration can be made by the funeral service, a relative or another person, with the medical certificate of death; the commune draws up the death record.
Both countries are parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973), so the body travels with a laissez-passer issued in Luxembourg. Under the agreement, the destination and transit countries may not require any documents other than the laissez-passer and the usual transport documents. The coffin must be impervious and lined with absorbent material, for example an outer wooden coffin with a soldered zinc inner coffin.
Required documents
Usually needed: the Luxembourg death record, the medical certificate of death, the passport or identity document of the deceased, the applicant's documents and the funeral service's papers. For registering the death in Moldova, extracts of the record may be needed, with an apostille if required (Luxembourg and Moldova both apply the Hague Convention). We confirm the exact list for your case.
Specifics of Luxembourg
Moldova has no embassy in Luxembourg; consular questions go to the embassy in Brussels, and we help prepare the request. Ashes fall outside the Strasbourg Agreement (Article 1(3)); for an urn we set out the documents separately.
Frequently asked questions
