Repatriation from Slovakia to Moldova
We take care of the Slovak paperwork and the journey to Moldova, and you speak to one coordinator throughout.
- Issuing authority and document
- Slovakia and Moldova are both parties to the Strasbourg Agreement. The Slovak Funeral Act (No. 131/2010) names the self-governing region (samosprávny kraj) as the body issuing the corpse passport (pas pre mŕtvolu) and, in special cases, the regional public health office or the institution that carried out the autopsy. The text does not say clearly whether this list applies to taking a body out of Slovakia, so we confirm the competent office for each case.
- Transport
- By air or by road. The mode of transport and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family case by case, depending on the city, the documents and the route.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): from 1 000 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
Both Slovakia and Moldova are parties to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement. The body therefore travels with a laissez-passer issued in Slovakia, and under the agreement the country of destination may not ask for other documents beyond the laissez-passer and the usual transport documents.
The Slovak Funeral Act (No. 131/2010) provides that international transport covered by a treaty is carried out in the way the treaty lays down, and that remains are transported dressed and in a coffin. The text does not say expressly for which direction of transport the list of issuing bodies applies, so we confirm the office in each case. The funeral service in Slovakia prepares the coffin and the certificates, and we coordinate the rest.
Required documents
Usually needed: the Slovak death certificate (úmrtný list) from the civil registry, the identity document of the deceased, the documents of the person applying, and the certificates of the funeral service. Slovakia is a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, and a list of the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (last updated in 2017) places it among the states whose documents are accepted without an apostille. The list is old, so we check each document.
Specifics
According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, the Moldovan embassy accredited to Slovakia is seated in Vienna, and there are honorary consuls in Bratislava and Košice. We handle contact with the embassy, so that the family does not have to travel. For an urn the rules differ from those for a body, and the Strasbourg Agreement does not apply to ashes.
Frequently asked questions

Is there a Moldovan embassy in Slovakia?
