Repatriation from Lithuania to Moldova
We help with the Lithuanian documents and the journey to Moldova, and you speak to one coordinator throughout.
- Issuing authority and document
- Lithuania and Moldova are both parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (Lithuania since 2009). Lithuanian law requires a permit (laissez-passer) to take remains out of the country, issued under the procedure set by the Government or by the institution it authorises; we confirm the exact office at the start of each case.
- Transport
- By air or by road. The mode of transport and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family case by case, depending on the city, the documents and the route.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): from 1 700 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
Both Lithuania and Moldova are parties to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement; for Lithuania it entered into force on 11 September 2009. The body therefore travels with a laissez-passer issued in Lithuania, and under the agreement the country of destination may not ask for other documents beyond the laissez-passer and the usual transport documents.
Under the Lithuanian law on the burial of human remains (a 2016 amendment, as presented in parliamentary documents), remains are taken abroad with a permit to transport the body (laissez-passer) issued under the procedure set by the Government or its authorised institution. We have not read the current consolidated text in full, so we confirm the office and the current list in each case.
Required documents
Usually needed: the Lithuanian death certificate, the identity document of the deceased, the documents of the person applying, the laissez-passer and the certificates of the funeral service. Lithuania is a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, and a list of the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (last updated in 2017) places it among the states whose documents are accepted without an apostille. The list is old, so we check each document.
Specifics
Moldova has an embassy in Vilnius; its official page lists the issuing of civil status acts among its consular services. We handle contact with the embassy and with the Lithuanian funeral service. For an urn the rules differ from those for a body, and the Strasbourg Agreement does not apply to ashes; we confirm the list of documents for your city.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lithuania a party to the Strasbourg Agreement?
Yes. According to the Dutch treaty database and the Council of Europe table (status of 2014), the agreement entered into force for Lithuania on 11 September 2009. Moldova has been a party since 2003, so the rules of the agreement apply.
Who issues the laissez-passer in Lithuania?
Lithuanian law provides for a permit issued under the procedure set by the Government or by the institution it authorises, and does not name a specific institution. We confirm the exact office for your case at the start, under the rules in force.
Is there a Moldovan embassy in Lithuania?
Yes, in Vilnius. The embassy's official page lists the issuing of civil status acts among its consular services. We handle contact with the embassy and prepare the documents together with you.
Can we bring home the ashes from Lithuania?
Yes. For an urn the rules differ from those for a body, and the Strasbourg Agreement does not apply to ashes. We confirm the documents once we know the Lithuanian city.
