Repatriation from Hungary to Moldova

We take care of the Hungarian and Moldovan paperwork and the journey to Moldova, and you speak to one coordinator throughout.

Issuing authority and document
Hungary is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses, so Hungarian rules apply. The mortuary passport is, as a rule, issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova. Which Hungarian authority permits the body to leave the country, we establish at the start for each case.
Transport
By air or by road. The mode of transport and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family case by case, depending on the city, the documents and the route.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
Price
Body (repatriation of remains): from 1 000 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The 1973 Strasbourg Agreement works only between states that have signed and ratified it. Moldova is a party, but Hungary does not appear among the parties, neither in the Council of Europe table (status of 2014) nor in the Dutch treaty database. A single laissez-passer therefore cannot be assumed to be enough: Hungarian rules and Moldovan requirements apply together.

According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova. The Moldovan embassy is in Budapest, and consular services are booked online. We prepare the documents and stay in touch with the embassy and the funeral service in Hungary, so that you do not have to deal with each office separately.

Required documents

Usually needed: the Hungarian death certificate, the identity document of the deceased, the documents of the person applying, and the certificates of the funeral service. Hungary is a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, and a list of the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (last updated in 2017) places Hungary among the states whose documents are accepted without an apostille. The list is old, so we check each document.

Specifics

Because the Strasbourg Agreement does not operate between Hungary and Moldova, we do not assume that a single document will satisfy the country of destination; we confirm the exact list with the embassy at the start. For an urn the rules differ from those for a body, and the Agreement does not apply to ashes; we confirm the list of documents for your city.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hungary a party to the Strasbourg Agreement?

We did not find it among the parties, neither in the Council of Europe table (status of 2014) nor in the Dutch treaty database (checked in October 2026). Moldova is a party, but the agreement works only between participating states, so for Hungary we check the requirements separately.

Who issues the mortuary passport for transport from Hungary?

As a rule, an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova. The embassy is in Budapest, and consular services are booked online. The Hungarian authority that permits the body to leave the country is established at the start.

Do Hungarian documents need an apostille for Moldova?

Hungary is a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs list (last updated in 2017) places it among the states whose documents are accepted without an apostille, but the list is old. We check each document before it is submitted.

Can we bring home the ashes from Hungary?

Yes. For an urn the rules differ from those for a body, and the Strasbourg Agreement does not apply to ashes. We confirm the documents once we know the Hungarian city.
