Repatriation from the Vatican to Moldova
We found no published procedure for a death in the Vatican in official sources. We write only what we confirmed and clarify the rest directly with the authorities.
- Issuing authority and document
- The Holy See is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) in the Dutch treaty database, consulted on 13.10.2026. According to the mission list on mfa.gov.md, the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Prague is also accredited to the Holy See. The Vatican authority that issues the papers we have not confirmed from an official source; we clarify it with the Governorate of the State or through the embassy.
- Transport
- We have no official transport procedure for the Vatican. For the route from the Rome area: in the list of flights from Chisinau that we consulted (Wikipedia, destinations table, consulted 13.10.2026) there are direct flights to Rome-Fiumicino (FlyOne, HiSky, Wizz Air). We did not check this on the airport or airline sites, and we do not know whether they carry remains; we confirm separately.
- Timing
- We cannot name a timeline: the Vatican procedure is not confirmed from official sources. Once we clarify the authority, the papers and the mission, we agree the steps with the family and stay within what we have verified.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): On request
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
We did not find in official sources how the death of a foreign national is registered in the Vatican or who issues the papers for transport. The official website of Vatican City State gives only population statistics: 882 residents at 31.12.2024, of whom 6 died in 2024. If the death happened on Italian territory, for example in a hospital in Rome, Italian rules apply (see the Italy page).
So we do not describe steps that we could not verify. With the family we establish the exact place of death and the competent authority, and then continue with the papers.
Required documents
On the Moldovan side: the mortuary passport is issued by Moldovan embassies or consulates, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of that state (mfa.gov.md, 13.10.2026). The Holy See is not in the Hague Apostille Convention table (HCCH, 13.10.2026) nor in the Moldovan foreign ministry's list of recognised documents (02.02.2017); whether an apostille or legalisation is needed for a Vatican document we do not know, and we will ask the embassy.
What is not confirmed
Not confirmed: the Vatican authority that issues the death certificate; coffin requirements; how removal from Vatican territory is organised; whether the embassy in Prague has requirements different from the general ones. These points go on the page only after verification.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Strasbourg Agreement apply to the Vatican?
No. The Holy See is not among the parties in the Dutch treaty database, consulted on 13.10.2026.
Which Moldovan embassy handles the Vatican?
According to the list on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026), the embassy in Prague is also accredited to the Holy See. We confirm with it which documents it asks for the mortuary passport.
What if the death was in a hospital in Rome?
Then the death happened on Italian territory and the Italian rules apply, as described on the Italy page. We establish the exact place of death at the start.
Why are details of the Vatican procedure missing?
Because we found no official source on it. We prefer to say so than to assume unverified steps.
