Repatriation from Norway to Moldova
We help with the Norwegian and Moldovan documents and the journey to Moldova. For countries outside the Nordic region Norway requires a coffin with a metal inner shell.
- Issuing authority and document
- Norway and Moldova are both parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses. Under the Norwegian regulation on the transport of bodies, for transport from Norway the sender must arrange for the police to issue the death documents when they are required; the local police issue them on presentation of the doctor's statement of death.
- Transport
- By air or by road. The mode of transport and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family case by case, depending on the city, the documents and the route.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): from 2 600 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The Strasbourg Agreement (1973) provides that during international transfer the body is accompanied by a laissez-passer issued by the competent authority of the State of departure. Which documents Norway requires and what the Moldovan side requires are checked separately, from the start.
The Norwegian regulation requires the sender to learn the rules of the destination country and of any transit countries. The body and the coffin are labelled with the deceased's name, date of birth and date of death, and the coffin also with the sender and the recipient. Airlines have their own rules for carrying a coffin, so we check them in advance.
Required documents
The Norwegian regulation refers to the doctor's statement of death and to the death documents issued by the police when they are required; we establish the full list of documents case by case. Norway and Moldova are both parties to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention and the HCCH status table shows no objection in force; we check which documents need an apostille case by case.
Norwegian specifics
For transport to countries outside the Nordic region the Norwegian regulation requires a coffin with a metal inner shell; this is also tied to Council of Europe rules, and IATA requires the same for air transport. Transport to a Nordic country may use a body bag, but Moldova is not a Nordic country. Some countries also require embalming and a certificate on infection risk.
The Norwegian regulation does not apply to the transport of ashes or an urn; what Moldova requires for an urn is checked separately. The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Stockholm is accredited to Norway as well.
