Repatriation from Romania to Moldova
If someone close to you has died in Romania, we help bring them home to the Republic of Moldova and take care of the documents and the journey.
- Issuing authority and document
- Romania is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement. We confirm the Romanian procedure and the issuing office for each case.
- Transport
- By air or by road. The mode of transport and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family case by case, depending on the city, the documents and the route.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): from 250 €
Ashes (urn): from 250 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
Romania is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), so Romanian national rules apply. We confirm the procedure and the responsible office for your city at the start.
Under the 1996 treaty on legal assistance between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, documents issued by the competent authorities of one country are valid in the other without legalisation. This makes the Moldovan side of the paperwork simpler.
Required documents
Usually needed: the Romanian death certificate, the identity document of the deceased, the documents of the applicant and the certificates of the funeral service. We confirm the list for your case.
Frequently asked questions
Do Romanian documents need an apostille in Moldova?
No legalisation is needed: under the treaty between the two countries, documents of the competent authorities are valid without it. Romanian documents are already in Romanian, so a translation is usually not needed.
Is road transport possible from Romania?
Yes, road transport is possible, as is air transport. We agree the mode of transport and the handover point with you.
The deceased had Romanian citizenship. Does that change anything?
The documents depend on which passport the person held. We check the requirements for your case.
