Repatriation from Estonia to Moldova

We help with the Estonian and Moldovan documents and the journey to Moldova. Moldova has its own embassy in Tallinn.

Issuing authority and document
Estonia and Moldova are both parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses, so the body travels with a laissez-passer issued by the competent authority of the State of departure. We did not find an official source naming that authority in Estonia; we confirm it at the start of each case.
Transport
By air or by road. The mode of transport and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family case by case, depending on the city, the documents and the route.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
Price
Body (repatriation of remains): from 2 200 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to the Estonian Tax and Customs Board (EMTA), when a coffin or urn is taken from Estonia to another country, the requirements of the destination country are the starting point. EMTA also advises checking the airline's requirements.

For Moldova, what the Moldovan side requires is checked separately, including with the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Tallinn. Which documents the Estonian funeral service prepares and which apostilles or translations are needed we establish case by case; we coordinate the paperwork.

Required documents

We did not find an official source listing the exact documents for departure from Estonia, so we establish the list case by case with the funeral service and the embassy. Estonia and Moldova are both parties to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention and the HCCH status table shows no objection in force; we check which documents need an apostille or a translation case by case.

Estonian specifics

We did not find an official source saying which Estonian authority issues the laissez-passer, so we name none here; we establish it with the Estonian funeral service and the embassy before the documents are submitted.

The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Tallinn works with Estonia, according to its website. For an urn the rules differ from those for a body; we confirm the list of documents in your case.
