Repatriation from Croatia to Moldova
If someone close to you has died in Croatia, we help bring them home to the Republic of Moldova, with the Croatian and Moldovan documents and the journey arranged.
- Issuing authority and document
- Croatia is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement, so Croatian rules apply. Under the 2018 Croatian regulation (Pravilnik, NN 116/2018), the transport of a deceased person is approved on the request of family members: spouse, children or parent. Moldova has no mission in Croatia: the country is covered by the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Budapest.
- Transport
- By air or by road. The mode of transport, the border crossing and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family case by case.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): from 1 600 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The transport request must state the deceased's details, the time, place and cause of death, the place of burial in Croatia (if any), the border crossing, the means of transport and, for road transport, the registration number. It is accompanied by a copy of the death certificate, a copy of the applicant's identity document and a copy of the hearse's registration document.
The Croatian regulation provides for a special accompanying document, the sprovodnica (mortuary passport), issued by the sanitary inspector for the place of death when the person died of a contagious disease. For other cases we confirm at the start which document and which authority are needed.
Required documents
Usually needed: the Croatian death certificate, the passport or identity document of the deceased, the documents of the applicant (a family member) and the funeral service's papers. Croatia and Moldova both apply the Hague Apostille Convention, so Croatian documents can be apostilled for Moldova. We confirm the exact list for your case.
Specifics of Croatia
For transport by air the Croatian regulation provides for a hermetically sealed metal coffin, or a sealed waterproof, gas-proof bag or foil, in each case with a safety valve with a filter, placed inside a wooden coffin. Moldova has no embassy in Croatia; consular questions go to the embassy in Budapest, and we help prepare the documents. For an urn we set out the list of documents separately.
