Repatriation from Germany to Moldova
If someone close to you has died in Germany, we help bring them home to the Republic of Moldova, with the German and Moldovan documents and the journey arranged.
- Issuing authority and document
- Germany is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement. The German mortuary passport (Leichenpass) is issued by a local office, which depends on the federal state.
- Transport
- By air or by road. The mode of transport and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family case by case, depending on the city, the documents and the route.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): from 1 700 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
Germany is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), so the national rules of Germany apply, together with the requirements of the consulate of the Republic of Moldova. As a rule, the mortuary passport is then issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova.
The German mortuary passport (Leichenpass) is issued by a local office that depends on the federal state: in Bavaria, for example, it is the municipality where the journey begins. According to the Hague Conference status table, the Apostille Convention has applied between Germany and Moldova since 17.07.2026, so German documents can be apostilled for use in Moldova.
Required documents
Usually needed: the German death certificate, the passport of the deceased, the documents of the applicant and the certificates of the funeral service. We confirm the list for your federal state.
