Repatriation from Italy to Moldova
If someone close to you has died in Italy, we help bring them home to the Republic of Moldova. We take care of the permits, the documents and the journey, and keep you informed at each step.
- Issuing authority and document
- Italy is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement, so Italian rules apply. The permit to move the body is issued by the local authority where the death occurred; for transport to Moldova, the consent (nulla osta) of the Moldovan consulate may also be needed, and we check this at the start.
- Transport
- By air or by road. The mode of transport and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family case by case, depending on the city, the documents and the route.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): from 1 800 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
Italy is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), so the national rules of Italy apply, together with the requirements of the consulate of the Republic of Moldova. As a rule, the mortuary passport is then issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, more mortuary passports have been issued for deaths in Italy since 2020 than for any other country.
As a rule, the permit to move the body is arranged with the local authorities in the place of death, and for countries outside the 1937 Berlin Agreement, Italian rules also ask for a clearance (nulla osta) from the consulate of the country of destination. For Moldova it may be needed, and we check this at the start. The coffin must meet Italian national requirements, which are stricter than the general international standard. We coordinate the Italian offices and the Moldovan consulate, so that you do not have to deal with each one separately.
Required documents
Usually needed: the Italian death certificate, the passport or identity document of the deceased, the documents of the person applying, and the certificates prepared by the funeral service in Italy. The exact list depends on the comune and the consulate, and we confirm it for your case.
Frequently asked questions
Who issues the permit to move the body out of Italy?
The local authorities in the place where the death occurred. The responsible office can differ between provinces, so we confirm it at the start.
Do we have to go to the Moldovan consulate in Italy ourselves?
Usually not. With your consent, we prepare the documents and coordinate with the consulate. Some steps may need the signature of a relative, and we will tell you exactly which ones.
Can we bring home the ashes from Italy instead of the body?
Yes, if the family chooses cremation. The rules for ashes differ from those for a body, and we confirm the documents for your case.
How long does repatriation from Italy take?
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local offices, the consulate and the transport.
