Repatriation from Monaco to Moldova

Monaco borders only France on land, and the Nice airport is close by. We help with the Monegasque and Moldovan documents and with the journey through France to Moldova.

Issuing authority and document
Monaco is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973) in the Dutch treaty database list we consulted on 13.10.2026, so for Monaco we do not rely on the Agreement's laissez-passer. France, through whose territory the body travels, has been a party since 10.06.2000. For a death in Monaco the family goes to the Mairie de Monaco for the mandatory declaration and the death certificate, and a funeral firm handles the documents for moving the body or the urn (Government of Canada page, modified 16.11.2021). We found no official Monegasque source (gouv.mc) on taking a body out of the country, so we do not state local requirements. According to secondary public sources (the list of Moldovan missions on Wikipedia, 13.10.2026), Monaco is covered by the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Paris, and the Consulate General in Nice appears in the same list; we did not find confirmation on mfa.gov.md, so we check this at the start.
Transport
Monaco lies about 13 km from Nice, and Nice Côte d'Azur airport is a little under an hour from Monaco (Wikipedia does not say by what means); Monaco borders France on three sides (Wikipedia, 13.10.2026). In a straight line it is about 1,700 km to Chișinău (our own calculation from coordinates). The Chișinău airport page lists Nice (Wizz Air; FlyOne and SkyUp seasonal), but schedules change and we do not assume that a coffin can leave on a particular flight: we check the cargo option and, if needed, the road route for each case and agree the handover point in Moldova with the family.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the declaration at the Mairie, the apostille, the papers the Monegasque and French authorities require for transport, and the flight or road available from Nice.
Price
Body (repatriation of remains): from 2 300 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

For a death in Monaco, the first step is the declaration at the Mairie de Monaco, after which the death certificate is issued. The funeral firm prepares the documents for transport out of the country (Government of Canada page, 16.11.2021; the information is brief and dated, so we check it again).

Because Monaco is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement, the transport document is not the Agreement's laissez-passer. The mortuary passport can be issued by Moldovan embassies and consulates, and we check what is accepted for your case at the start, including what France requires in transit.

Required documents

Usually needed: the Monegasque death certificate with an apostille, the passport or identity document of the deceased, the documents of the person applying and the funeral firm's papers. Monaco has been in the Hague Apostille Convention since 31.12.2002 and the HCCH table shows no objection by Moldova (checked 13.10.2026), so an apostille is the usual route; the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that a foreign certificate must be legalised. We confirm the translation and the exact list for each case.

Local requirements, coffin and urn

We have no verified official source on Monaco's requirements for the coffin and for taking the body out; we find them out from the funeral firm and the authorities rather than assuming them from French rules, which are different rules.

If the family chooses cremation, the Strasbourg Agreement does not cover ashes in any case (Article 1(3)). We settle the place of cremation and the documents for an urn travelling to Moldova separately, because we have not found an official Monegasque source.

Frequently asked questions

Where is a death declared in Monaco?

At the Mairie de Monaco, according to the Government of Canada page (16.11.2021). With your consent we help the funeral firm with the documents that follow.

France is a party to the Strasbourg Agreement and Monaco is not. Does it matter?

Yes, for the choice of documents. For Monaco we do not assume the Agreement's laissez-passer; we check what the Monegasque authorities require, what France requires in transit and which document Moldova accepts.

Is there a direct flight from Nice to Chișinău?

The Chișinău airport page lists Nice (Wizz Air; FlyOne and SkyUp seasonal), but schedules change and a coffin is not accepted on every flight. We check the cargo option for your case and choose between air and road.

Which Moldovan embassy handles Monaco?

Secondary public sources name the embassy in Paris, and their list also shows the Consulate General in Nice. We did not find confirmation on mfa.gov.md; we check at the start, before documents are submitted.
