Repatriation from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to Moldova

In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines the death is registered at the Civil Registry, with a medical certificate and a magistrate's warrant. There is no crematorium on the islands. We take you through the steps and the documents for Moldova.

Issuing authority and document
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973; list on treatydatabase.overheid.nl, consulted 13.10.2026), so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guidance (updated 05.01.2026), deaths are registered at a Civil Registry, in the main office in Kingstown or in the registration district where the death occurred; the next of kin does it, or a funeral director with a letter of authorisation. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026; the page shows no date) has no embassy in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and does not name this country among those covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
Transport
Kingstown is about 8,950 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from the cities' coordinates). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (Wikipedia, consulted 13.10.2026) has no flights to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The article on Argyle International Airport (same source, consulted 13.10.2026) lists Virgin Atlantic to London–Heathrow, without a seasonal or charter mark, and services to Barbados, other Caribbean islands, the United States and Canada. The airport article also lists a number of small-island airlines, so a death on a Grenadine island may mean an inter-island leg first. The journey to Chișinău involves at least one connection; which airlines take remains on these routes we have not verified.
Timing
The UK guidance gives no deadline for registration and says copies of the death certificate usually take 2 days to issue. It does not give timings for taking remains out of the country. For Moldova we promise no timeline and confirm it once we have the documents.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to the guidance, registering the death takes a medical certificate signed by the doctor who attended the deceased and a medical warrant issued by a magistrate; if a post-mortem is carried out, the magistrate also issues a Warrant to Bury. The legal steps are taken by the next of kin (the spouse or the closest living blood relative under local law). The office hours given in the guidance are Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.

A post-mortem is usually performed when the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent, by forensic doctors appointed by the court. The guidance says tissue samples and organs may be kept for testing without the family's consent, and that the family is not told automatically.

Required documents

For a transfer to the UK the guidance lists the death certificate from the civil registry, a certificate of embalming and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains; it does not mention coffin requirements. For burial, cremation and repatriation it also names a warrant of burial, the embalmer's certificate and transit documents. We do not state this as the Moldovan list. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulted 13.10.2026), the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the country where the death occurred.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (the HCCH table lists it under succession, with a succession date of 02.05.2002 and an entry-into-force date shown as 27.10.1979; HCCH table updated 30.06.2026), and the legalisation page of mfa.gov.md (dated 02.02.2017) lists it as a country whose documents are used with an apostille. The form and the order of steps for a mortuary file we confirm with the competent Moldovan mission before sending documents.

Specifics of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

The guidance says there are no crematoriums on Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, so a body to be cremated must be taken to a neighbouring island. It lists facilities on Grenada, Barbados, Saint Kitts and Saint Lucia. This adds a step and a transit before any flight to Moldova.

To take ashes out of the country, the guidance says you must show the death certificate and the certificate of cremation. Depending on the case it may also be necessary to have the warrant of burial (in a sudden death or a homicide), the embalmer's certificate, the transit and declaration documents from the Ministry of Health and the deceased's identification.
