Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The United States is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), so the national rules of the United States apply, together with the requirements of the consulate of the Republic of Moldova. As a rule, the mortuary passport is then issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova.
According to the embassy's published list, the application is made by the funeral home or a relative and includes, among other things, the original death certificate with an apostille, the passport of the deceased, an embalming certificate, confirmation that the coffin has been sealed, confirmation that there was no infectious disease, and the planned route.
Required documents
Usually needed: the death certificate with an apostille, the passport of the deceased, the certificates of the funeral home and the documents of the applicant. The list is set by the embassy and may change; we confirm it before the application.
