Repatriation from Chile to Moldova

Chile is very far from Moldova, and the release of the body here depends on a judge. We help you follow the local steps in order and prepare the Moldovan documents in parallel.

Issuing authority and document
Chile is not on the public list of parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), which we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Chilean rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide for Chile (updated 03.02.2026), the local death certificate, in Spanish, is issued by the Registro Civil e Identificación. The list of Moldovan missions (consulted 13.10.2026) shows no embassy or consulate in Chile and does not list Chile among the countries covered by other missions, so we clarify with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which mission issues the mortuary passport.
Transport
By air, over a very long distance: in a straight line it is about 13,300 km from Santiago to Chișinău (our own calculation). The list of destinations of Chișinău airport (Wikipedia, consulted 13.10.2026) shows no destination in South America, so the route and connections are planned for each case.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. In Chile it depends on the judge: the British guide says the body is not released until the judge is satisfied that local procedures are complete. The same guide gives one to two weeks for straightforward cases, but that is information for British nationals, not a promise.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The death certificate is issued by the Registro Civil e Identificación; the British guide says registration takes 24 to 72 hours depending on the city. The certificate shows the cause of death.

The family appoints an international funeral director, who authorises a local firm to handle the local paperwork. The judge may ask for a lawyer or for notarised, legalised originals.

Required documents

As a rule: the local death certificate in Spanish, the identity document of the deceased, the documents of the person applying and, if the judge asks, notarial documents. For cremation the British guide lists the death certificate, a letter of consent from the next of kin and the original passport. Chile is a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention (in force since 30.08.2016), and the status table we consulted on 13.10.2026 shows no recorded objection; Chilean documents are, as a rule, apostilled, and we confirm their acceptance with the Moldovan side. The translation and the exact list are agreed in advance. We have not found coffin or embalming requirements in an official source, so we confirm them with the funeral director.

Specifics of Chile

The court takes the key decisions, and the British guide notes that the body is not released until the judge is satisfied that procedures are complete. That is why we ask the family early who will act and whether a relative can sign or give a power of attorney.

Cremation is possible (the British guide lists crematoria in Santiago). Ashes can be taken with minimal bureaucracy, but the guide says the person collecting them must be in Chile. For transport of ashes to Moldova we confirm the documents with the Chilean authorities and the airline.

Frequently asked questions

Who decides on the release of the body in Chile?

The judge, according to the British government guide: the body is not released until local procedures are confirmed complete. We follow the decision and prepare the Moldovan documents in parallel.

Is there a Moldovan embassy in Chile?

In the list of missions we consulted on 13.10.2026 we found none in Chile. We clarify with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which embassy or consulate issues the mortuary passport.

Can we bring home the ashes instead of the body?

Yes, if the family chooses cremation. The British guide notes that ashes can be taken with little bureaucracy but by a person who is in Chile; we confirm the documents for Moldova for your case.

Do we have to travel to Chile?

Not necessarily. An international and a local funeral firm handle the paperwork, though the judge may ask for notarial documents or a power of attorney. We tell you from the start what a relative must sign.
