Repatriation from Guyana to Moldova
Guyana is on the other side of the Atlantic, so the work is mostly documents and route planning. We help with the Guyanese certificates, the Moldovan mortuary passport and the way to Chișinău.
- Issuing authority and document
- Guyana is not on the list of 24 states for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), which we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Guyanese rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide (updated 20.01.2025), a death is registered with the General Registrar's Office in Georgetown, usually by the next of kin or by a funeral director with a written letter of authorisation. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs page on Guyana (consulted 13.10.2026) records diplomatic relations since 12.09.2013 but does not name a mission that serves the country, so we clarify with the Ministry which mission issues the mortuary passport.
- Transport
- By air. In a straight line it is about 9,200 km from Georgetown to Chișinău (our own calculation). The list of destinations of Chișinău airport (RMO) on Wikipedia, read on 13.10.2026, shows no destination in Guyana or elsewhere in the Caribbean or South America, so a route with connections is planned for each case; we have not verified which airlines carry remains on it. For ashes, the British guide advises checking the airline rules in advance.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The British guide sets no time limit for registration. A post-mortem, when the authorities require one, is usually carried out 2 to 3 days after the body is placed in the public mortuary; we do not know how long the Ministry of Health letter (for ashes) or the Moldovan mission will take, so we give no figure.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the British guide, the next of kin (under Guyanese law a spouse or the closest living blood relative) usually registers the death, or a local funeral director does it with a letter of authorisation. The local certificate is the basis for all later steps.
A post-mortem is usually carried out when the death is unnatural or suspicious, or when the Guyanese authorities ask for one, by court-appointed forensic doctors or pathologists. Mortuaries exist at Georgetown Public Hospital and at New Amsterdam Hospital in Berbice.
Required documents
For repatriating remains the British guide names three documents: the local civil registry death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains. It says nothing about coffin requirements, so we clarify them through the Guyanese funeral director and the Moldovan mission.
Guyana is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (accession 30.07.2018, in force since 18.04.2019, per the HCCH table consulted on 13.10.2026) and the table shows no objection by the Republic of Moldova, so Guyanese documents are, as a rule, apostilled. The translation and the exact list for the Moldovan side are agreed in advance.
Specifics of Guyana
Local cremation is arranged through a funeral director. For it the guide lists an application form, the registration of death certificate (from two different doctors if a post-mortem was done), the coroner's order form A47 and, if the death occurred at home, a police report.
To take ashes out the guide lists a certificate of cremation, a Ministry of Health letter of permission, an examination and report by a Port Health Officer, the registrar's certificate with the cause of death, a statement on how the remains were prepared, a customs transit permit and a funeral home document certifying what the sealed container holds. The information comes from a guide for British citizens; we have not checked an official Guyanese text.
