Repatriation from Barbados to Moldova
Barbados is an island in the Caribbean, far from Moldova. The death is registered locally, and the transport documents go through local funeral directors. We help you take the steps in order.
- Issuing authority and document
- Barbados is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), in the public list we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Barbadian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guide (updated 05.01.2026), the death is registered at the nearest Registration Department or Magistrate's Court, in person or through a funeral director with a letter of authorisation. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; the list of missions on mfa.gov.md does not include Barbados, so we check which mission is competent before any documents are filed.
- Transport
- Barbados is an island, so the remains or the urn reach Moldova by air (for ashes the UK guide also mentions sea shipping arranged by funeral homes). We do not assume a direct flight to Chișinău (RMO), because we found no source confirming one; the route and the handover point are agreed with the family once the documents are in hand.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The UK guide says the death certificate is usually issued within 3 days of the post-mortem, and the post-mortem is usually done within 48 hours, subject to the pathologist's availability. Embalming, the transport documents and the flight booking follow, and these do not depend on us alone.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.

The procedure
According to the UK government guide (05.01.2026, written for British families), the death must be registered in Barbados, at the nearest Registration Department or Magistrate's Court. If someone other than the relative registers it, the funeral director needs a letter of authorisation.
The guide says post-mortems are usually carried out on foreign nationals who die in Barbados, especially when the cause is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent. The certificate is issued in English and does not state the cause of death. Because the guide is written for British families, we confirm the steps for the Moldovan side with the Moldovan mission.
Documents required
For repatriating a body the UK guide lists a local civil registry death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting the transfer of the remains; local funeral directors prepare them. The list for Moldova is set with the mission, from the actual documents.
Barbados appears in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, consulted on 13.10.2026, succession of 11.08.1995, in force from 30.11.1966), so Barbadian documents can carry an apostille. Whether Moldova accepts them in the required form and which translation is needed, we confirm before sending anything.
Specifics in Barbados
For storing the body, the guide mentions a limited number of cold-storage places at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown; the major funeral directors also have their own storage areas.
If cremation is chosen, the guide says only one crematorium in Barbados can host funeral services. To leave with ashes, the death certificate and the certificate of cremation are shown, and the funeral director supplies the urn declaration and transit documents. The airline's requirements for the urn we find out before the flight.

According to the UK guide (05.01.2026), at the nearest Registration Department or Magistrate's Court, by the relative or by a funeral director authorised by letter.
