Repatriation from Grenada to Moldova
Grenada has one crematorium and a general hospital mortuary with limited cold storage. We help you choose between a body and ashes and prepare the documents for Moldova.
- Issuing authority and document
- Grenada is not on the list of 24 states for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), which we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Grenadian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide (updated 28.07.2026), a death is registered with the Registrar General's Department, and a local funeral director can do it for you. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs page on Grenada (consulted 13.10.2026) records diplomatic relations since 26.06.2019 but says nothing about which mission serves the country, so we clarify with the Ministry which mission issues the mortuary passport.
- Transport
- By air. In a straight line it is about 9,100 km from St. George's to Chișinău (our own calculation). We have not verified any direct flight or which airlines accept remains from Grenada; the destination list of Chișinău airport (RMO) on Wikipedia, read on 13.10.2026, shows no Caribbean destination, so the route with connections is set for each case. For ashes the British guide advises asking the airline about hand luggage.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. According to the British guide the death certificate is usually issued within a few days, and a post-mortem, when required, usually takes place 2 to 3 days after the body reaches the mortuary, depending on the pathologist's availability. We do not know the time needed on the Moldovan side, so we give no figure.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The death is registered with the Registrar General's Department; a copy of the certificate goes to the next of kin. The certificate is issued in English and includes the cause of death.
A post-mortem is usually carried out when the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent, by court-appointed forensic doctors. Grenada General Hospital has mortuary facilities with a limited number of cold storage places, and the two funeral directors in Grenada also have cold storage.
Required documents
For repatriating remains the British guide names the local civil registry death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains. It describes no coffin requirements and no export permit, so we clarify them through the funeral director and the Moldovan mission.
Grenada is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (accession 17.07.2001, in force since 07.04.2002, per the HCCH table consulted on 13.10.2026) and the table shows no objection by the Republic of Moldova, so Grenadian documents are, as a rule, apostilled. The translation and the exact list for the Moldovan side are agreed in advance.
Specifics of Grenada
According to the British guide the only crematorium in Grenada is at La Qua Brothers Funeral Home. To leave with ashes you must show the death certificate and the certificate of cremation; a funeral director can transport the ashes if the family cannot.
The family usually does not receive the post-mortem report; according to the guide the British High Commission in Bridgetown can request one, which applies to British citizens. The information comes from a guide for British citizens; we have not checked an official Grenadian text.
