Repatriation from Suriname to Moldova
In Suriname the paperwork is in Dutch, and for ashes the Ministry of Justice and Police is involved. We help you through the local steps, the Moldovan side and the flight to Chișinău.
- Issuing authority and document
- Suriname is not on the list of 24 states for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), which we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Surinamese rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide (updated 30.03.2026), a death is registered with the Civil Registry (CBB); if a funeral director registers it, a letter of authorisation is needed. We did not find a page about Suriname on the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs site (the addresses we tried returned an error on 13.10.2026) and found no mission named for it, so we clarify with the Ministry which mission issues the mortuary passport.
- Transport
- By air. In a straight line it is about 9,100 km from Paramaribo to Chișinău (our own calculation). We have not found a verified direct flight, and the destination list of Chișinău airport (RMO) on Wikipedia, read on 13.10.2026, has no stop in South America or the Caribbean; the route with connections and the airline are chosen once the documents are ready. For ashes the British guide advises checking airline rules, including for hand luggage.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. According to the British guide registration usually takes 3 working days (the registry works Monday to Friday, 7:00 to 15:00). A post-mortem, when required, and the export permit for ashes from the Ministry of Justice and Police add time that we cannot state in advance.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
For a natural death a doctor prepares a death report, which is submitted to the Civil Registry, and the official death certificate (Overlijdens Akte) is then issued. If the cause is unknown, or the death is unnatural, sudden or violent, a pathologist carries out a post-mortem to determine the cause.
Post-mortems are done by court-appointed forensic doctors at the Academic Hospital in Paramaribo (AZP); the report is usually given to the next of kin, in Dutch. Cold storage exists in Paramaribo and Nickerie.
Required documents
The British guide lists for repatriating remains the local death certificate, a certificate of embalming, a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains and, if a post-mortem was done, its report. Coffin requirements and a separate export permit for the body are not described, so we clarify them through the Surinamese funeral director and the Moldovan mission.
Suriname is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (succession 29.10.1976, in force since 25.11.1975, per the HCCH table consulted on 13.10.2026) and the table shows no objection by the Republic of Moldova, so Surinamese documents are, as a rule, apostilled. Because certificates are in Dutch, the translation for the Moldovan side is agreed in advance.
Specifics of Suriname
The guide notes that Surinamese death certificates do not show the cause of death, so we find out in advance what medical information the Moldovan side asks for. There are crematoria in Suriname, and also several places where a body is cremated on a wood pyre.
For local cremation the guide lists, among other things, a cremation licence from the Ministry of Justice and Police, the written consent of the legal spouse or next of kin and a representative of the ministry present or authorising. To take ashes out you need the death certificate, the certificate of cremation and an export permit from the same ministry. The information comes from a guide for British citizens; we have not checked an official Surinamese text.
