Repatriation from Nicaragua to Moldova

In Nicaragua repatriating a body needs authorisations from two ministries, and the documents are in Spanish. We help you take the steps and prepare the documents for the Moldovan side. Our main source for the country dates from 2019, so we re-check everything in each case.

Issuing authority and document
Nicaragua is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), in the public list we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Nicaraguan rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to UK government information (updated 12.09.2019, so possibly out of date), the death is registered with the local authorities, and repatriation requires authorisation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; the list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted on 13.10.2026) shows no mission in Nicaragua, and we check which mission serves it before the documents are submitted.
Transport
We plan the flight only after the two ministry authorisations, because without them the body cannot leave Nicaragua. We found no source for a direct flight to Chișinău (RMO): the airport's destination list on Wikipedia (13.10.2026) includes no country of Central America. So we treat the route as a flight with a connection and agree it with the family.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The 2019 UK information says that where a post-mortem is carried out, the final death certificate takes about a month (the first one reads "cause of death still under study") and the post-mortem report is also released in about a month; the two ministry authorisations and the flight come on top.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to the UK government information (12.09.2019, written for British families), the hospital issues a medical report called the "epicrisis", which is registered at the Registro Civil de las Personas of the relevant municipality; the certificate is issued two days after the request. A funeral home can sometimes register the death for the family.

The information says a post-mortem is carried out only when a crime or accident is presumed, by a medical examiner approved by the Institute of Legal Medicine, and that only small organ and blood samples are taken. Because the information is old and written for British families, we confirm the current steps and those for the Moldovan side with the mission of the Republic of Moldova.

Required documents

The UK information says all documents are issued in Spanish, the official language. For Moldova the local death certificate is, as a rule, translated, and we confirm the exact list of documents with the Moldovan mission.

Nicaragua appears in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, consulted on 13.10.2026), in force since 14.05.2013. The table does not show the position of the Republic of Moldova on this accession, so we do not promise that an apostille is enough and we check with the Moldovan mission how the documents are legalised. According to mfa.gov.md, a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the state where it was issued.

Specifics in Nicaragua

The information says repatriation requires authorisation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health. Bodies are not usually embalmed, but embalming can be requested for repatriation. If a relative is in Nicaragua and asks for the body, it can be released to them.

Local cremation is available at some funeral homes. After a local burial or cremation a UK inquest is no longer possible; that is a British rule and does not concern Moldovan families. The information also says that deaths from infectious conditions (hepatitis, HIV) are reported to the local authorities.

Frequently asked questions

What is the "epicrisis" and why does it matter?

According to the UK information (2019), it is the hospital's medical report, which must be registered at the Registro Civil de las Personas of the relevant municipality; the certificate is issued two days after the request.

Which authorisations does repatriation from Nicaragua need?

The 2019 UK information says repatriation requires authorisation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health. We check whether the rule still applies before the documents are submitted.

Is the body embalmed automatically in Nicaragua?

No, according to the UK information: bodies are not usually embalmed, but embalming can be requested for repatriation.

Why do you say the information on Nicaragua may be out of date?

Because the only detailed source we found is the UK government information updated on 12.09.2019. That is why we confirm every step with the authorities and the Moldovan mission.
