Repatriation from Antigua and Barbuda to Moldova

Antigua and Barbuda is a small island state, and there is no crematorium on the islands, which affects the choice between a body and ashes. We help you decide and prepare the documents.

Issuing authority and document
Antigua and Barbuda is not on the list of 24 states for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), which we consulted on 13.10.2026, so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide (updated 28.07.2026), the death must be registered in Antigua and Barbuda, at the Civil Registry, by the next of kin or by a funeral director with a letter of authorisation. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs page (consulted 13.10.2026) records diplomatic relations since 18.11.2011 but does not say which mission serves the country, so we clarify with the Ministry which mission issues the mortuary passport.
Transport
By air. In a straight line it is about 8,700 km from St. John's to Chișinău (our own calculation). We have not verified any direct flight; the destination list of Chișinău airport (RMO) on Wikipedia, read on 13.10.2026, shows no Caribbean destination. With no crematorium on the islands, the choice between transporting the body and transporting ashes after cremation elsewhere also affects the route.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. According to the British guide the local certificate is issued within a few days. If a post-mortem is needed, the British guide says its date depends on the police investigation, so we cannot state the time in advance.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The next of kin usually registers the death at the Civil Registry, or a local funeral director does it with a letter of authorisation. The certificate is issued in English and states the cause of death.

A post-mortem is carried out if a medical professional considers it warranted, by forensic doctors appointed by the hospital or the court. The report is automatically given to the police; a copy can be requested in writing from the Commissioner of Police.

Required documents

For repatriating remains the British guide names the local civil registry death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains. A coffin requirement and a separate export permit are not described, so we clarify them through the local funeral director and the Moldovan mission.

Antigua and Barbuda is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (succession 01.05.1985, in force since 01.11.1981, per the HCCH table consulted on 13.10.2026) and the table shows no objection by the Republic of Moldova, so local documents are, as a rule, apostilled. The translation and the exact list for the Moldovan side are agreed in advance.

Specifics of Antigua and Barbuda

According to the British guide there are no cremation facilities in Antigua or Barbuda. A local funeral director can arrange cremation at a crematorium in Puerto Rico, Barbados or Grenada. We have not verified which of these places is practical for a flight to Moldova.

To leave with ashes the guide lists the death certificate, the certificate of cremation and a travel letter. The information comes from a guide for British citizens; we have not checked an official text of Antigua and Barbuda.
