Repatriation from Saint Kitts and Nevis to Moldova
On Saint Kitts and Nevis the death is registered at the Registrar General's office, and the remains leave with a certificate of embalming and a permission to transfer. We take you through the steps and the Moldovan documents.
- Issuing authority and document
- Saint Kitts and Nevis is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973; list on treatydatabase.overheid.nl, consulted 13.10.2026), so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guidance (updated 05.01.2026), the death is registered with the Registrar General's Office in St Kitts or the Registrar General Department in Nevis, and a local funeral director can register it for the family with a letter of authorisation and photo ID of the deceased. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026; the page shows no date) has no embassy in Saint Kitts and Nevis and does not name this country among those covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
- Transport
- Basseterre is about 8,700 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from the cities' coordinates). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (Wikipedia, consulted 13.10.2026) has no flights to Saint Kitts and Nevis. The article on Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (same source, consulted 13.10.2026) lists British Airways to London–Gatwick, without a seasonal mark, besides services to the United States, Canada and nearby Caribbean islands, and Cape Air flights to Nevis. So the journey to Chișinău involves at least one connection; we have not verified which airlines take remains on these routes, and we look at it with the family once the documents are known.
- Timing
- The UK guidance says a death certificate is usually issued within 2 days after a post-mortem, and that a post-mortem is usually carried out within 3 to 5 days after the body is placed in the mortuary but can take longer because the medical examiner is based in Barbados. Those are the guidance's figures for its own case, not ours. For Moldova we promise no timeline and confirm it once we have the documents.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the UK guidance, the legal steps are taken by the next of kin, defined locally as the spouse or the closest living blood relative. Someone else may need the next of kin's authorisation. Registration is local: the certificate is issued in English and includes the cause of death. Registrar offices work Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.
A post-mortem is usually carried out when the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent, by court-appointed forensic doctors. The guidance adds that a foreign national who dies within 24 hours of arrival is examined automatically, while for later deaths a doctor decides, and that small tissue samples and organs may be retained for testing without the family's consent.
Required documents
For a transfer to the UK the guidance names three documents for the funeral director: the local death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains. We do not state this as the Moldovan list: what the Moldovan side needs we establish at the start. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulted 13.10.2026), the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the country where the death occurred.
Saint Kitts and Nevis is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (accession 26.02.1994, in force 14.12.1994; HCCH table updated 30.06.2026), and the legalisation page of mfa.gov.md (dated 02.02.2017) lists it as a country whose documents are used with an apostille. The form and the order of steps for a mortuary file we confirm with the competent Moldovan mission before sending documents.
Specifics of Saint Kitts and Nevis
There are two registries, one for each island: the Registrar General's Office in St Kitts and the Registrar General Department in Nevis. The guidance says a death is registered where it occurred, so if it happened on Nevis the file starts at the Nevis registry; the guidance does not say which island the crematorium is on.
The guidance says the Liamuiga Funeral Home has crematorium facilities (the island is not specified). To take ashes out of the country you must show the death certificate and the certificate of cremation. The guidance also says the mortuary of Joseph N. France Hospital keeps bodies for up to 3 days before release to a funeral director.
Frequently asked questions
Where is a death registered on Saint Kitts and Nevis?
According to the UK guidance (05.01.2026), at the Registrar General's Office on St Kitts or the Registrar General Department on Nevis. A local funeral director can do it with a letter of authorisation and photo ID of the deceased.
Is a post-mortem always carried out?
No. The guidance says it is usually done when the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent. A foreign national who dies within 24 hours of arrival is examined automatically; for later deaths a doctor decides.
Can ashes be taken out of Saint Kitts and Nevis?
The guidance says you must show the death certificate and the certificate of cremation, and that the airline's rules on carrying ashes should be checked. For Moldova we ask what the competent mission needs.
Are there direct flights from Saint Kitts to Europe?
The Wikipedia article on the airport (consulted 13.10.2026) lists British Airways to London–Gatwick and no flight to Chișinău. So the route to Moldova has at least one connection; we check it at the start.
