Repatriation from Canada to Moldova
If a loved one has died in Canada, we help bring them home to the Republic of Moldova, working with the funeral home in Canada and the Moldovan consulate.
- Issuing authority and document
- Canada is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement. As a rule, a provincial burial-transit permit is needed, and the mortuary passport is issued by a Moldovan embassy or consulate.
- Transport
- By air to Chișinău International Airport (RMO). The route and the handover point in Moldova are agreed once the documents are ready.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): On request
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
Canada is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), so the national rules of Canada apply, together with the requirements of the consulate of the Republic of Moldova. As a rule, the mortuary passport is then issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova.
As a rule, a provincial burial-transit permit is needed to take a body out of Canada. Where there was a communicable disease, the Public Health Agency of Canada must also give permission. Canada applies the Hague Apostille Convention, so Canadian documents can be apostilled for use in Moldova.
Required documents
Usually needed: the provincial death certificate, the burial-transit permit, the passport of the deceased, the certificates of the funeral home and the documents required by the Moldovan consulate. We confirm the list for your province.
