Repatriation from Honduras to Moldova

In Honduras the local custom is burial within 24 hours, and cold storage is missing in many places. That is why it matters how quickly the paperwork and embalming start. We help you step by step, on the Honduran side and the Moldovan side.

Issuing authority and document
Honduras is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), in the public list we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Honduran rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to UK government guidance (November 2025), local funeral homes can carry out repatriation and supply the special coffins required for international carriage, and the death certificate is issued in Spanish. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; the list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted on 13.10.2026) shows no mission in Honduras, and we check which mission serves it before the documents are submitted.
Transport
From Honduras the body or ashes travel by air. The list of destinations of Chișinău airport (RMO) on Wikipedia (consulted on 13.10.2026) includes no country of Central America or the Caribbean, so we do not assume a direct flight; we look for connecting options in each case. The UK guidance notes that cold storage exists in Tegucigalpa and La Ceiba but not in most other places, so the departure city matters.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The UK guidance says that if the police do not consider the circumstances of the death unusual, the body can be released within a few days, while the post-mortem report is usually available within a month, though not always; immediate repatriation is not always possible.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure

According to the UK government guidance (November 2025, written for British families), in Honduras identification by the next of kin is not normally necessary; documents such as a passport or driving licence are enough. If the death is accidental or suspicious, the Honduran authorities are involved; the police bring in the Ministerio Público.

The guidance says a post-mortem is required under Honduran law when there is violence or suspicious circumstances; removed organs are put back, and the copy of the report is in Spanish and can be translated by a local translator. Because the guidance is written for British families, we confirm the steps for the Moldovan side with the mission of the Republic of Moldova.

Required documents

The UK guidance says shipping the remains may require a local death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate giving permission to transfer; the funeral home in Honduras obtains them. We confirm the list for Moldova with the Moldovan mission.

Honduras appears in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, consulted on 13.10.2026), in force since 30.09.2004. The table does not show the position of the Republic of Moldova on this accession, so we do not promise that an apostille is enough and we check with the Moldovan mission how the documents are legalised. According to mfa.gov.md, a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the state where it was issued.

Specifics in Honduras

The UK guidance says the local custom is burial within 24 hours, and that embalming is available and commonly used by families who want remains shipped to another country. If the family has no plot in a private cemetery, the funeral home asks the authorities for permission to bury in a public cemetery, for a fee.

For a local cremation the guidance lists the local death certificate, a letter from the next of kin giving permission to cremate, a copy of the deceased's passport and a letter from the British embassy; the last requirement concerns British nationals, and for Moldovan citizens we confirm the list with the Moldovan mission.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a post-mortem if a Moldovan citizen dies in Honduras?

According to the UK guidance (November 2025), a post-mortem is required under Honduran law in cases of violence or suspicious circumstances; the report is in Spanish and can be translated by a local translator. For a death without unusual circumstances the guidance does not call it mandatory.

Why does time matter so much in Honduras?

The UK guidance notes that the local custom is burial within 24 hours, that cold storage exists in Tegucigalpa and La Ceiba but not in most other places, and that the condition of the body cannot be guaranteed.

Can a funeral home in Honduras prepare international transport?

The guidance says funeral homes in Honduras can carry out the repatriation procedures and supply the special coffins required for international carriage. Which one is chosen and what documents each asks for we settle case by case.

Who helps if there is no Moldovan mission in Honduras?

The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) does not mention Honduras. We find out which mission of the Republic of Moldova issues the mortuary passport and tell you before the documents are submitted.
