Repatriation from El Salvador to Moldova

El Salvador is in Central America, across the Atlantic, and the paperwork passes through the civil registry, the forensic doctors and a local funeral home. We help you take the steps and prepare the documents for the Moldovan side.

Issuing authority and document
El Salvador is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), in the public list we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Salvadoran rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to UK government guidance (November 2025 version), the death is registered at the Registro Nacional de las Personas Naturales, usually through the funeral home, and the death certificate is issued on the basis of the medical certificate. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; the list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted on 13.10.2026) shows no mission in El Salvador, and we check which mission serves it before the documents are submitted.
Transport
From El Salvador the body or ashes travel by air, across the Atlantic. The list of destinations of Chișinău airport (RMO) on Wikipedia (consulted on 13.10.2026) includes no destination in Central America or the Caribbean, so we do not assume a direct flight; we look for connecting options in each case and agree the handover point in Moldova with the family.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The UK guidance says that, generally, remains not collected from the mortuary within a week may be buried by the authorities in a common grave, so the first steps are taken quickly; post-mortem reports and tests can take several months.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure

According to the UK government guidance (November 2025, written for British families), the medical certificate is requested from the hospital or doctor who last treated the person; if the death was violent or accidental, it is requested from the police, at the Corte Suprema de Justicia. The certificate is submitted to the Registro Nacional de las Personas Naturales, which issues the death certificate. The funeral home usually registers the death, but the next of kin can do so too.

The guidance says mortuaries vary widely: larger towns usually have temperature-controlled storage, but rural areas may not, and the body cannot then be kept in good condition. Because the guidance is written for British families, we confirm the steps for the Moldovan side with the mission of the Republic of Moldova.

Required documents

For repatriation the UK guidance lists a local civil registry death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains. We confirm the list for Moldova with the Moldovan mission; as a rule the identity document of the deceased and the documents of the person applying are needed too.

El Salvador appears in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, consulted on 13.10.2026), in force since 31.05.1996. The table does not show the position of the Republic of Moldova on this accession, so we do not promise that an apostille is enough and we check with the Moldovan mission how the documents are legalised before sending anything. According to mfa.gov.md, a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the state where it was issued.

Specifics in El Salvador

The guidance says a post-mortem is usually carried out when the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent, at the regional mortuary of the Institute of Legal Medicine "Dr. Roberto Masferrer". Cultural or religious sensitivities may not be taken into account, and tissue samples or organs may be kept for testing without the family's consent; the family is not told automatically.

The authorities must be told if the person had an infectious condition (for example hepatitis or HIV), so they can take precautions. The guidance adds that post-mortem reports and further tests can take several months and may be delayed further by a criminal investigation.

Is there a direct flight from El Salvador to Chișinău?

We found no source confirming one; the destination list of Chișinău airport (Wikipedia, 13.10.2026) includes no country of Central America. We look for connecting options in each case.
