Repatriation from Guatemala to Moldova

In Guatemala burial customarily takes place within 24 hours, and cold storage exists mainly in the capital. We start early with the local funeral director.

Issuing authority and document
Guatemala is not among the parties to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses (Dutch treaty database, 13.10.2026), so the country's own rules and Moldova's requirements apply. According to the British Embassy Guatemala City information pack (updated 27.11.2025), the death certificate is issued in Spanish and the transfer permission certificate is prepared by the funeral director; the guide does not name the authority that issues it. In the list of Moldovan missions on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) the country appears neither with its own mission nor among the countries served by other missions; we have not confirmed which mission serves it and are clarifying with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Transport
By air, with no land route: Guatemala City is roughly 10,900 km from Chisinau in a straight line (our own calculation). The destination list of Chisinau airport (RMO; Wikipedia, 13.10.2026) shows no destination in South or Central America or the Caribbean; we have not checked direct flights in other sources, so the route and connections are set case by case. The UK guide says cold-storage facilities are available in the capital but not in most places outside it, which matters for a death far from the city.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The UK guide says that where circumstances are not unusual the body is released within a few days, and an autopsy report is usually available within a month, but delays are possible; this is information for British nationals, not a promise.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The death certificate is issued in Spanish; the guide notes that a funeral director can help obtain it more quickly. The next of kin do not normally have to identify the deceased: a document such as a passport is enough. In an accidental or suspicious death the authorities become involved.

Moldova also requires a mortuary passport. According to mfa.gov.md, the mortuary passport is issued by Moldovan embassies or consulates, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the state that issued it (mfa.gov.md/ro/content/deces, 13.10.2026).

Documents needed

The UK guide says that shipping remains may require the local death certificate, an embalming certificate and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains, which the Guatemalan funeral director arranges. The exact list for Moldova is checked separately.

Guatemala is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (in force from 18.09.2017) with a declaration marked 'D' in the HCCH table; we have not checked what the declaration says. The table shows no objection from Moldova (13.10.2026).

Specifics in Guatemala

The guide says embalming facilities are available and commonly used by families who ship remains to another country, and local funeral directors provide the special caskets for international carriage. It does not give technical coffin requirements.

Guatemalan law requires an autopsy in cases of violence or suspicious circumstances. For cremation the guide lists the death certificate, a letter from the next of kin giving permission, and a copy of the passport, plus a letter from the British Embassy (the guide is written for British nationals).

Frequently asked questions

Who issues the transfer permit for remains in Guatemala?

The British Embassy guide (2025) says only that the transfer permission certificate is prepared by the local funeral director; the issuing authority is not named. We do not assume it and are clarifying.

Why does starting quickly matter?

The UK guide says local custom is burial within 24 hours and cold storage exists mainly in the capital. If the family wants repatriation, embalming and documents are settled from the start.

What does the 'D' declaration for Guatemala in the apostille table mean?

The HCCH table marks Guatemala with the letter D, a declaration. We have not checked its content, so for each document we confirm separately whether an apostille is enough.

Can I bring the urn with ashes from Guatemala?

The guide says local cremation is possible and the family can carry the ashes with less bureaucracy or the funeral director can prepare the paperwork for sending them. Moldova's requirements are confirmed separately.
