Repatriation from Saint Lucia to Moldova
On Saint Lucia the death is registered at the Registry of Civil Status, and a post-mortem is usually carried out when the cause of death is unknown or sudden. We take you through the steps and the documents for Moldova.
- Issuing authority and document
- Saint Lucia is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973; list on treatydatabase.overheid.nl, consulted 13.10.2026), so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guidance (updated 05.01.2026), a death on Saint Lucia is registered at the Registry of Civil Status, usually by the next of kin or by a local funeral director acting under a letter of authorisation. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026; the page shows no date) has no embassy in Saint Lucia and does not name this country among those covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
- Transport
- Castries is about 8,900 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from the cities' coordinates). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (Wikipedia, consulted 13.10.2026) has no flights to Saint Lucia. The article on Hewanorra International Airport (same source, consulted 13.10.2026) lists British Airways to London–Gatwick, without a seasonal mark, and services to the United States and Canada. The journey to Chișinău involves at least one connection; which airlines take remains on these routes we have not verified.
- Timing
- The UK guidance says the death certificate is usually issued within 2 days of the post-mortem and the post-mortem is usually carried out within a week after the body is placed in the mortuary. Those are the guidance's figures, not ours. For Moldova we promise no timeline and confirm it once we have the documents.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the guidance, the next of kin (the spouse or the closest living blood relative under local law) usually registers the death, or a local funeral director does it with a letter of authorisation. The certificate is issued in English and states the cause of death; the UK does not require a separate registration.
A post-mortem is usually carried out when the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent, by court-appointed forensic doctors, and cultural or religious sensitivities may not be taken into account. The guidance says a copy of the report is usually not given to the family and that tissue and organs may be retained for testing without consent.
Required documents
For a transfer to the UK the guidance names the death certificate from the civil registry, a certificate of embalming and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains. It does not say whether a particular coffin is required. We do not state this as the Moldovan list. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consulted 13.10.2026), the mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the country where the death occurred.
Saint Lucia is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (accession 05.12.2001, in force 31.07.2002; HCCH table updated 30.06.2026), and the legalisation page of mfa.gov.md (dated 02.02.2017) lists it as a country whose documents are used with an apostille. The form and the order of steps for a mortuary file we confirm with the competent Moldovan mission before sending documents.
Specifics of Saint Lucia
Local cremation is possible and the guidance says Saint Lucia has crematoriums. To take ashes out of the country you need the death certificate, the certificate of cremation and a transit permit, which the funeral director usually arranges. The guidance adds that ashes can also be sent by air or sea between funeral homes.
Cremated remains can only be scattered at sea, according to the guidance; how far from the shore, the local authorities say. We name no local funeral home, since the guidance names none for Saint Lucia.
