Repatriation from Panama to Moldova
Panama requires special coffins for international transport, and ashes cannot be sent by post. We give only what the sources we consulted say and show what we could not confirm.
- Issuing authority and document
- Panama is not in the public list of the 24 countries of the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement (13.10.2026), so Panamanian rules and Moldova's requirements apply. According to the UK government guide (published 27.05.2026), a death is registered with the Dirección Nacional del Registro Civil (Tribunal Electoral), normally through the funeral home. In the list of Moldovan missions on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) the country appears neither with its own mission nor under 'also accredited'; we have not confirmed which mission serves it and are clarifying with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Transport
- By air. Panama City is roughly 10,600 km from Chisinau in a straight line (our own calculation), with no land route. We have not checked direct flights to Chisinau (RMO) or the connections used, so the route is set case by case. The UK guide says Panamanian funeral homes supply the special coffins required for international transport.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The UK guide notes that immediate repatriation is not always possible and that timing depends on the circumstances of the death and local bureaucracy; post-mortem reports can be heavily delayed.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The death is registered with the Dirección Nacional del Registro Civil, usually through the funeral home. The UK guide asks for the deceased's identity document and, where relevant, written authorisation. A post-mortem is done if the cause is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent; organs may be kept for tests without the family's consent, and the report is usually not given to the family.
For transport the body is prepared by a Panamanian funeral home, which also supplies the special coffin. We have not yet found an official Panamanian page describing the requirements; we will add them once confirmed.
Documents needed
For shipping remains the UK guide mentions the local death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a permit to transfer the remains; the issuing body is not named. It also says documents are legalised through Panama's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Panama is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (in force from 04.08.1991) and carries no objection note in the HCCH table (13.10.2026); what form of confirmation the Moldovan side asks for, we settle at filing.
Specifics in Panama
For cremation the funeral home usually needs a letter of permission from the next of kin, a copy of the deceased's passport and passport photos, according to the UK guide.
On ashes, the same guide says the rules vary by location, that they cannot be sent by post or courier, and that air freight is possible; they can be carried personally or through the funeral home.
