Repatriation from Uruguay to Moldova
Uruguay is one of the countries farthest from Moldova. We help you take the local steps in order and prepare the Moldovan documents in parallel.
- Issuing authority and document
- Uruguay is not among the parties to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses (Dutch treaty database, 13.10.2026), so the country's own rules and Moldova's requirements apply. According to the UK government guide (updated 22.11.2023), the death is registered with the Registro Civil (General Registry Office), usually through the funeral director, and the conservation certificate is issued by the town hall's sanitary department (Dirección de Salubridad). In the list of Moldovan missions on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) the country appears neither with its own mission nor among the countries served by other missions; we have not confirmed which mission serves it and are clarifying with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Transport
- By air, with no land route: Montevideo is roughly 12,400 km from Chisinau in a straight line (our own calculation, approximate starting point). The destination list of Chisinau airport (RMO; Wikipedia, 13.10.2026) shows no destination in South or Central America or the Caribbean; we have not checked direct flights in other sources, so the route and connections are set case by case. The UK guide mentions an air waybill issued by the airline or cargo company.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The UK guide says repatriation formalities 'may take some days', but autopsies are normally carried out in all cases and histopathology and toxicology reports can take between 40 days and 12 months; this is information for British nationals, not a promise.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The death is registered with the local authorities, usually through the funeral director, on the basis of the doctor's certificate and a copy of the deceased's passport. The registered certificate is in Spanish; the UK guide says it usually takes a couple of days and suggests ordering at least three certified copies.
Moldova also requires a mortuary passport. According to mfa.gov.md, the mortuary passport is issued by Moldovan embassies or consulates, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the state that issued it (mfa.gov.md/ro/content/deces, 13.10.2026).
Documents needed
The UK guide lists the doctor's death certificate, the Registro Civil certificate, the conservation certificate from the town hall, the next of kin's authorisation, an air waybill, and legalisation of the documents at the Uruguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a translation. The guide describes legalisation for use abroad, with the documents translated into English; the exact list for Moldova is checked separately.
Uruguay is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (in force from 14.10.2012; the HCCH table shows no objection, 13.10.2026), as is Moldova. Which document needs an apostille is settled case by case.
Specifics in Uruguay
According to the UK guide, autopsies are normally performed in all cases, and for violent or sudden deaths a certificate of identification of the remains may also be issued. If a post-mortem is carried out, cremation has to be authorised by the judge, and not every judge allows it.
Cremation is possible at local facilities and, among other things, needs a letter from the town hall. The guide says funeral directors provide the special caskets required for international carriage but does not set out the requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Who issues the conservation certificate in Uruguay?
According to the UK government guide (2023), the sanitary department of the town hall (Dirección de Salubridad of the Intendencia). Embalming also needs a sanitary protocol from the same department.
Is an autopsy carried out in every case in Uruguay?
The UK guide says autopsies are normally performed in all cases and certainly when the death is not natural. That is why we ask early on whether there is a court file.
Can cremation be refused?
Yes: if a post-mortem takes place, cremation has to be authorised by the judge, and the UK guide notes that not every judge allows it. In that case we discuss moving the body with the family.
Do documents from Uruguay need an apostille?
Uruguay and Moldova are both parties to the 1961 Hague Convention and the HCCH table shows no objection (13.10.2026). Which documents need an apostille and a Romanian translation is settled case by case.
