Repatriation from Peru to Moldova
Peru is one of the most distant destinations on our list. Embalming and a special coffin are mandatory, and investigations can delay the release of the body.
- Issuing authority and document
- Peru is not in the public list of the 24 countries of the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement (13.10.2026), so Peruvian rules and Moldova's requirements apply. According to the UK government guide (updated 22.10.2024), a death is registered with the local authorities, usually through the funeral home, at the Registro Civil (RENIEC); post-mortem reports are issued by the Public Ministry. In the list of Moldovan missions on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) the country appears neither with its own mission nor under 'also accredited'; we have not confirmed which mission serves it and are clarifying with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Transport
- By air. Lima is roughly 12,200 km from Chisinau in a straight line (our own calculation), with no land route. We have not checked direct flights to Chisinau (RMO) or the connections used. Per the UK guide, undertakers in Lima can do the embalming and the special coffin, and from remote areas a body may take a few days to reach the designated morgue.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. According to the UK guide, the full post-mortem report is usually issued within a few months, and criminal investigations can delay the release of the body. Distance and the number of connections may add time compared with countries in the region.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The death certificate is provisional at first, in Spanish; the UK guide says obtaining it usually takes a couple of days, and a certified copy can be requested from the Registro Civil. If the deceased had an infectious condition such as hepatitis or HIV, the authorities must be told.
For repatriation the guide says the remains must be embalmed and placed in a special coffin. Undertakers in Lima can do this; they also arrange shipping.
Documents needed
The UK guide lists the civil registry death certificate, the doctor's certificate stating the cause of death, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting transfer of the remains; the body issuing the last is not named. Peru is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (in force from 30.09.2010), with an objection note in the HCCH table. According to the Dutch treaty database, Germany (withdrawn) and Greece (withdrawn 26.07.2024) objected; Moldova is not among them (13.10.2026). Translation into Romanian and the exact list are settled in advance.
Specifics in Peru
Cremation is possible but may not be allowed while an investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing. The UK guide says that if ashes are shipped, the funeral home handles the paperwork and transport.
Repatriation is not always possible immediately; in criminally investigated cases release of the body can be postponed, which also affects flight planning.
Frequently asked questions
Are embalming and a special coffin compulsory in Peru?
Yes, per the UK guide (2024): for repatriation the remains must be embalmed and placed in a special coffin. Undertakers in Lima can provide both.
Can cremation be refused in Peru?
The UK guide says cremation may not be allowed while an investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing. In such cases we discuss moving the body with the family.
What is the objection note beside Peru in the apostille table?
Some states objected to Peru's accession in 2010 (Germany and Greece, both since withdrawn, per the treaty database checked on 13.10.2026). Moldova is not among them.
How long does a post-mortem report take in Peru?
The UK guide says the full report is usually issued within a few months, in Spanish, by the Public Ministry. Release of the body does not always depend on the full report; we confirm this with the funeral home.
