Repatriation from Ecuador to Moldova

Ecuador has its own procedure: a death can only be registered once a local forensic doctor issues a form, and the repatriation permit comes from the Ministry of Public Health. We help you gather the documents in the right order.

Issuing authority and document
Ecuador is not on the public list of parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), which we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Ecuadorean rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide for Ecuador (published 14.04.2025), the death is registered at the Registro Civil, and the certificate of permission to repatriate the body is issued by the Epidemiology Department of the Ministry of Public Health. The list of Moldovan missions (consulted 13.10.2026) shows no mission in Ecuador; we clarify with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which embassy or consulate issues the mortuary passport.
Transport
By air, over a very long distance: in a straight line it is about 11,300 km from Quito and about 11,600 km from Guayaquil to Chișinău (our own calculation). The list of destinations of Chișinău airport shows none in South America (Wikipedia, consulted 13.10.2026), and according to the British guide the repatriation permit goes to the airline together with a flight itinerary, so the route is decided before the application.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the forensic doctor, the Registro Civil, the Ministry of Public Health permit and the air route; the British guide gives no time limits.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure

According to the British guide, a death can be registered at the Registro Civil only when the INEC form, issued by a local forensic doctor, is available. The funeral director usually takes care of the registration.

The repatriation permit is issued by the Epidemiology Department of the Ministry of Public Health; it goes to the airline and the funeral director and includes a basic flight itinerary.

Required documents

The list in the British guide: the medical death certificate, the death registration certificate, the certificate of removal of organs and embalming, the repatriation permission certificate, the passport of the deceased (or a certified copy or other ID), the funeral director's certificate that the coffin meets health regulations, and the air waybill from the airline. Ecuador is a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention (in force since 02.04.2005); in the table we consulted on 13.10.2026 Ecuador has a note about a declaration whose content we did not read, so we confirm the acceptance of Ecuadorean documents with the Moldovan side. The translation and the exact list are agreed in advance.

Specifics of Ecuador

The British guide says that Ecuadorean law requires some organs to be removed, treated and returned to the body before repatriation, but also mentions cases where all organs were removed; we therefore discuss this with the funeral director early.

Cremation is not allowed in Ecuador if the death was violent (for example murder, overdose or suicide). For cremation and for ashes the Ministry of Public Health issues separate permits; ashes may not be sent by post or courier, but can go by air freight or be carried by a person who tells the airline in advance.
