Repatriation from Jamaica to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Jamaica to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Embassy in Caracas. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Jamaica are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Jamaica
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Jamaica always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Jamaica are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Jamaica: the honorary consul in Kingston
Jamaica is covered by the Polish Embassy in Caracas, a post located in a different region of the Caribbean and South America. A Polish Honorary Consulate operates in Kingston; the scope of its help we establish with the embassy. We therefore do not assume that the honorary consul will issue the certificate or accept the application; we confirm that in your case.
The certificate for bringing remains or ashes home is issued by the consul in Caracas. Documents are filed in person or by post, the visit date is arranged by email, and the consul issues the certificate promptly, no later than three days after the application is filed. Collection is in person or by post at the applicant's cost. We handle sending the documents from Jamaica to Venezuela, contact with the embassy and transport to Poland. Local documents, such as the death certificate and transport approvals, we check against the Polish requirements before they reach Caracas.
In Jamaica a death must be registered within five days, unless a coroner is investigating, and no later than 12 months. After that, the Registrar General's Department must give permission for late registration. For a death outside hospital the family informs the police. For a sudden or violent death a post-mortem is required, and the coroner sends a certificate to the office before the death is entered. After registration a Burial Order is issued, the permit for burial or cremation. The death entry number from this document is needed to order a copy of the death certificate, which can be collected at one of nine offices of the department. This information comes from the department's statement of May 2022. We keep these steps in order and order the copy ourselves so that it reaches the consul in Caracas complete.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in Caracas.
