Repatriation from Uruguay to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Uruguay to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Embassy in Buenos Aires. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Uruguay are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Uruguay
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Uruguay always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Uruguay are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Uruguay: the Registro Civil registers the death
Uruguay is served by the Polish Embassy in Buenos Aires (Alejandro María de Aguado 2870), which also covers Argentina and Paraguay. A visit is arranged by email. Besides the starosta's permit and the death certificate, the embassy lists sanitary documents: a cremation certificate, a certificate that the coffin or urn is fit for international transport, or a police protocol of the coffin's closure. If the consul refuses, he issues a decision, against which a complaint can be lodged with the Minister of Foreign Affairs within 7 days, through the consul. The certificate is collected in person or sent by post.
In Uruguay a death is entered at the Registro Civil office, in Montevideo at the offices on Sarandí, in the interior at the municipal office or the departmental capital. The deadline is 10 working days from the day after death (20 in rural areas), and you need the death certificate, identity documents and two adult declarants. We guide the family through this and the transport.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in Buenos Aires.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
