Repatriation from Romania to Poland

We help bring the deceased from Romania to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.

Issuing authority and document
Export documents are issued by the authorities of the country of death; we confirm them in your case. Polish certificate: the Polish consul with territorial jurisdiction in this country; we identify the mission in your case.
Transport
By a special vehicle for the conveyance of bodies, or by air. We agree the route and the handover point in Poland with the family.
Timing
We confirm the timing once we have the documents. The law provides that the starosta and the consul issue their documents within 3 days of the application at the latest (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries and Burial of the Dead); in practice time is added for the sanepid's opinion and delivery of the originals, and the time needed for matters in the country of death depends on the local offices.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure: Romania

This country is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses of 1973 (according to the Netherlands treaty database, as of 13 October 2026). Poland is not a party to it, so in addition to the documents from the country of death, the Polish consul's certificate is needed.

The country is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (according to the HCCH, as of 13 October 2026), so documents from this country can be authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it.

Romania: where and when a death is registered

In Romania a death is declared to a civil status officer at any S.P.C.L.E.P. office or, where there is none, at the town hall (primărie). The record is drawn up by the office of the place of death or the place where the body was found. The deadline is three days from the date of death. For suicide, accident, other violent death or a found body, the three days run from the issue of the medical death certificate, and registration requires proof from the police or prosecutor that the case was reported.

The Romanian interior ministry portal gives an average issuing time of three calendar days and a maximum of thirty. In sudden deaths we check with the family from the start whether the police or prosecutor is involved, because registration depends on it.

The Consular and Polonia Section of the Polish Embassy in Bucharest receives clients from Monday to Friday between 9:30 and 15:00 and only by prior appointment. Appointments are set by phone on working days from 8:30 to 16:30. Outside the capital there are three honorary consulates, also by appointment only. The consulate in Brașov covers the counties of Argeș, Brașov, Buzău, Covasna, Dâmbovița, Prahova, Sibiu and Vâlcea, the consulate in Cluj-Napoca covers Bihor, Bistrița-Năsăud, Cluj, Maramureș, Mureș, Sălaj and Satu Mare, and the consulate in Timișoara covers Alba, Arad, Caraș-Severin, Gorj, Hunedoara and Mehedinți. For a death in Transylvania or the Banat it is worth knowing this when planning the first steps, because Bucharest can be far from the place of death. We confirm the scope of each of these offices with the mission in your case.

The Polish consul's certificate

The certificate for bringing a body or ashes to Poland is issued by the Polish consul with territorial jurisdiction in this country; we identify the mission in your case.

On the Polish side two documents are always needed, for an urn too: the starosta's permit and the Polish consul's certificate (Article 14(4) of the Act on Cemeteries and Burial of the Dead).

Documents for the consul: body

  • Burial permit issued by the starosta or the city mayor.

  • For cremation: documents confirming the identity of the cremated person.
