Procedure: Malta

Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Malta always requires the Polish consul's certificate.

Documents from Malta are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).

Malta: the Polish Embassy in Valletta

In Malta consular matters are handled by the Polish Embassy in Valletta. The appointment is arranged by email, and documents can be submitted in person or by post. The certificate is collected in person or sent by post at the applicant's cost. The embassy's page states that besides the starosta's permit and the document confirming the death, additional papers may be needed, which are agreed with the consular office.

The sequence is this: a death document issued by the Maltese authorities, a funeral home on both sides, the starosta's permit in Poland, the consul's certificate and only then the transport. We organise each of these stages and make sure the documents are consistent. If the family does not bring the remains home, the consul asks the local authorities for a burial on the spot. Once the documents are ready, we take on the preparation of the remains and the transport to Poland, together with collection on arrival and the funeral ceremony the family plans. We clarify the detailed requirements of this country's authorities on request in your case.

The Polish consul's certificate

The certificate is issued by the Polish consul with territorial competence for this country. We confirm the mission in your case.

How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
