Repatriation from Montenegro to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Montenegro to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Embassy in Podgorica. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- By a specialised hearse or by air. We agree the route and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Montenegro are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Montenegro
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Montenegro always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Montenegro are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Montenegro: the embassy in Podgorica and visits arranged by email
The Polish Embassy in Podgorica operates in Montenegro. According to the gov.pl page, a visit about the certificate for bringing remains home is arranged by email to the embassy secretariat, and documents can be submitted in person or by post. The list of documents is the same for remains and ashes, so we do not prepare two sets. We make sure the message to the embassy secretariat contains the deceased's details and the list of attached documents from the start.
Whether the documents need translation we check with the embassy before sending anything. Montenegro is in Europe, and the means of transport, road or flight, is decided by a specialised transport company. On the Polish side the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate are needed. We confirm the detailed requirements of this country's authorities on request, for your case.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in Podgorica.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
