Repatriation from Estonia to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Estonia to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish consul confirmed in your case. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- By a specialised hearse or by air. We agree the route and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Estonia are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Estonia
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Estonia always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Estonia are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Estonia: the death certificate comes from the civil status office
Estonia is served by the Polish Embassy in Tallinn, at Suur-Karja 1 / Vana Turg 2. A visit is arranged by email, and documents can be submitted in person or by post. On the Estonian side, death certificates are issued by civil status offices, that is, local governments and Estonian representations abroad. If the consul refuses, he issues a decision, against which a complaint can be lodged with the Minister of Foreign Affairs within 7 days, through the consul. The certificate is collected in person or sent by post.
These offices accept documents in Estonian, as well as in English or Russian. A multilingual standard form can be attached to an Estonian death certificate to make it easier to use in Poland. We gather the documents from both sides, file the application for the starosta's permit and organise the transport, so the family does not have to travel between offices.
The Polish consul's certificate
The nearest mission linked to this country on gov.pl is the Polish Embassy in Tallinn. We confirm the competent mission in your case.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
