Repatriation from Latvia to Poland
We help bring the deceased from Latvia to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or ashes.
- Issuing authority and document
- Export documents are issued by the authorities of the country of death; we confirm them in your case. Polish certificate: the Polish Embassy in Riga.
- Transport
- By a special vehicle for conveying remains or by air. We agree the route and the place of handover in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- We confirm the date once we have the documents. The Act provides that the starosta and the consul issue their documents within 3 days of the application at the latest (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries and Burial of the Dead). In practice, extra time is needed for the opinion of the district sanitary inspector (sanepid) and for delivery of the originals. How long matters take in the country of death depends on the local authorities.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Latvia
This country is a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses of 1973 (according to the Netherlands treaty database, as of 13 October 2026). Poland is not a party to it, so in addition to documents from the country of death the Polish consul's certificate is needed.
According to the Polish mission's website, consent to the conveyance of a body (laissez-passer for a corpse) is issued by the Latvian Health Inspectorate (Veselības inspekcija).
This country is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (according to the HCCH, as of 13 October 2026), so documents from it can be authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for this.
A death in Latvia: the civil registry and six working days
According to the City of Riga website, a death must be reported within six working days of the death or of the body being found. The report is made in person at any civil registry division in Latvia, not only in the place of residence, and the procedure is free. Relatives, a funeral home representative, a neighbour and other persons may report it.
A medical certificate of the cause of death from a medical institution or doctor is required, as well as the identity document of the person reporting, and, if a court established the death, a copy of the ruling. The office enters the death in the register and issues the death certificate. On the Polish side the case is handled by the Consular Department of the Embassy in Riga. Because the death can be registered at any division, we choose the one closest to the funeral home and watch the six-day deadline.
The Polish consul's certificate
The Polish consul's certificate for bringing a body or ashes to Poland is issued by the Polish Embassy in Riga.
On the Polish side two documents are always needed, for an urn too: the starosta's permit and the Polish consul's certificate (Article 14(4) of the Act on Cemeteries and Burial of the Dead).
Documents for the consul: body
According to the Polish mission's website, the following are needed:
- Before the visit: the death certificate from the civil registry office (USC), issued on the basis of the certificate of the cause of death; consent to the conveyance of the body, “LAISSEZ-PASSER FOR A CORPSE”, from the Latvian Veselibas inspekcija (a copy of the certificate of the cause of death, a copy of the death certificate, a certificate from the funeral company that the coffin contains only the body, and an application).
- At the consulate: the original death certificate, a copy of the certificate of the cause of death, an authorisation from a family member for the funeral company, the decision of the city mayor or the starosta permitting the body to be brought in, and an application.
Frequently asked questions
Who issues the Polish consul's certificate when a body is brought from Latvia?
The Polish Embassy in Riga, on the basis of the starosta's permit and the death certificate. The Act provides that the certificate is issued within 3 days of the application at the latest (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries and Burial of the Dead).
Are permits needed for an urn from Latvia?
Yes. The Polish rules on conveying remains apply accordingly to ashes, so the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate are needed.
