Repatriation from Hungary to Poland

We help bring the deceased from Hungary to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or ashes.

Issuing authority and document
Export documents are issued by the authorities of the country of death; we confirm them in your case. Polish certificate: the Polish Embassy in Budapest.
Transport
By a special vehicle for conveying remains or by air. We agree the route and the place of handover in Poland with the family.
Timing
We confirm the date once we have the documents. The Act provides that the starosta and the consul issue their documents within 3 days of the application at the latest (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries and Burial of the Dead). In practice, extra time is needed for the opinion of the district sanitary inspector (sanepid) and for delivery of the originals. How long matters take in the country of death depends on the local authorities.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure: Hungary

This country is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses of 1973 (according to the Netherlands treaty database, as of 13 October 2026). Poland is not a party to it either, so in addition to documents from the country of death the Polish consul's certificate is needed.

This country is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (according to the HCCH, as of 13 October 2026), so documents from it can be authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for this.

Hungary: the original permit and a cremation certificate

The certificate for transport from Hungary is issued by the territorially competent consular office, with contact through the Polish Embassy in Budapest. For a body you present the original Polish burial permit, issued by the starost or city mayor for the cemetery of the funeral, and a copy of the death certificate or another official document confirming the death. For ashes the original cremation certificate is added.

The consul issues the certificate immediately and no later than three days after the application. When the family does not bring the deceased to Poland, the consul asks the Hungarian authorities for a burial under local law at their expense, in a public cemetery. If you want to bury your loved one in Poland, we start with the starosta's permit and the preparation of transport. We confirm translation and apostille requirements with the mission for each document.

The Consular and Polonia Section of the Polish Embassy in Budapest receives on Mondays from 9:00 to 13:00 and on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 18:00, and a visit can be arranged on request. The embassy's emergency number covers, among other things, the death of a Polish citizen. It operates on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays before 8:15 and after 16:15, on Wednesdays before 10:00 and after 18:00, and at weekends at any hour. Outside the capital two honorary consulates operate. The consulate in Szeged covers Csongrád-Csanád county and receives on Wednesdays from 16:00 to 17:00, and the consulate in Szolnok covers Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Hajdú-Bihar counties, from 9:00 to 13:00. In both cases an individual appointment can also be arranged.

  • Original certificate of cremation of the body (cremation certificate).
