Repatriation from Portugal to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Portugal to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish consul confirmed in your case. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- By a specialised hearse or by air. We agree the route and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Portugal are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Portugal
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Portugal always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Portugal are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Portugal: the death report and the consulate in Lisbon
In Portugal a death is declared through the system of the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN) of the Ministry of Justice. According to the Justiça portal this must be done within two days of the death. The death certificate, which identifies the deceased and the date, time and place of death, can then be ordered or checked online with the IRN. The portal also offers a simulator showing the steps and documents in a specific situation.
On the Polish side the visit to the consulate in Lisbon is arranged by email, the application is submitted in person or by post, and the certificate is collected in person or sent by post at the applicant's cost. The consul issues the certificate promptly, within three days at the latest. Two days for the report is a short deadline, so we help the family from the first day: we establish who reports the death, collect the documents and prepare the transport to Poland.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the Polish consul with territorial competence for this country. We confirm the mission in your case.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
